Another member of Coahoma’s memorable 1978 and 1979 teams, Ramona McCastle is hands-down one of the most talented athletes to ever wear a Lady Tigers uniform. A graduate of Sicily Island High School in Louisiana, she averaged 29 points per game before graduating and heading to Baton Rouge to play basketball at Southern University. After being cut from the Southern team, she was approached by CCC Coach Ella Stampley-Morris and offered a scholarship. During her career at Coahoma, McCastle averaged 20-plus points per game, nine steals and four assists. The Lady Tigers team earned its highest-ever national ranking (No. 2) with McCastle earning All-American honors, a selection to the Mississippi All-Star game where she was voted the MVP, a selection to the National Junior College All-Star Game, being named the nation’s best defensive player, and also a selection into the National Junior College Hall of Fame for the 1979 season. She graduated from CCC with an associate’s degree in Elementary Education and received 22 scholarship offers to major universities. She continued her career accepting an offer to play at Mississippi Valley State where she was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 1982. She was an All-State and All-American selection at MVSU and earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. McCastle was headed to play professionally for the New Orleans Pride of the Women’s Professional Basketball League but unfortunately it folded during her senior year. McCastle has gone on to coach basketball at the high school, junior college and university levels and is currently pursuing her doctoral degree in education.
