Coahoma Community College Athletics Hall of Fame
The 1979 COAHOMA JUNIOR COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM: The greatest team ever assembled — in any sport — at CCC, they put on a show that CCC and other schools will never forget. This team defeated its opponents by an average of 35 points and averaged 102.2 points per game, scoring more than 100 points on most teams, they were ranked No. 2 in the Nation.
The 1979 team consisted of four players from Clarksdale: Rychelle Liggans and Shirley Hall from Clarksdale High School and Gay Nell Beasley and Sandra Wiley from Coahoma Aggie High School.
Joy Mosby from Greenville, O’Bannon High School. Bernita Jackson from Charleston High School. Linda Howard from Webb, West Tally High School. Bonnie McCray from Quitman County High School.
Five players from Louisiana: Susie Fudge and Brenda Olive from Delta High School; Ramona McCastle from Sicily Island High School; Chan Crockett and Alice White from Waterproof High School.
What was so unique about this team was their strong desire and love for the game of Basketball. You could always find them in the gym either practicing or playing games. This type of dedication is missing in today’s athletes. They packed the house every time they played at home with standing room only. Others coaches summary of this team was, "You can’t do nothing with Coahoma because they got two big girls around the basket that won't allow you to get near the basket and two guards on the outside ‘popping like popcorn. They’re just awesome!"
Their overall record was 35-3 and the were the North Division Winner, State Runner’s Up and Regional champions and lost in the semi-finals in the national tournament.
They were the most successful team ever at CCC.
