Tigers Split Doubleheader Against Trojans

Box Score MOORHEAD- Coahoma needed two wins to assure a postseason berth on Wednesday afternoon. They would have to do it on the road against crosstown rival Mississippi Delta. Both teams didn't disappoint by playing two well-played contests. Eduardo Munoz led The Tigers with a masterful performance in a 4-2 victory in game one. The Trojans came with 2 huge runs late in a 2-0 win in game two.

In the first game, Coahoma took care of business resulting in a 4-2 victory Mississippi Delta.

Mississippi Delta (17-25, 9-17 MACJC) got on the board 1-0 in the first inning. Parker Lane stepped up with an RBI single for the Trojans.

The Tigers pulled away for good with four runs in the fourth inning. Kyler Johnson came through with an RBI double, Matthew Newcomb had an RBI single, and Joe Gee got a 2-RBI single.

The Trojans scored one run in the fourth inning. Markarius Lee came through with an RBI single.

Mississippi Delta had one more chance with a runner at first base in the ninth inning. Munoz shut down the Trojans striking out three of the last four batters. He is credited with the win for Coahoma. He allowed 11 hits and two runs over nine innings, striking out eight and walking zero.

Chance Guthrie took the loss for Mississippi Delta. He lasted five and two-thirds innings, allowing ten hits and four runs while striking out three.

Mississippi Delta totaled 11 hits. Devontae Rhodes and Dalton Lambre each had multiple hits. Rhodes went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Trojans in hits.

Coahoma collected ten hits on the day. Johnson, Alexis Rodriguez, and Hector Torres all managed multiple hits. Torres, Rodriguez, and Johnson each collected two hits to lead the Tigers.

In the second game, both teams were strong on the mound, but Mississippi Delta was just a little stronger at the plate in a 2-0 victory over Coahoma.

It was a scoreless game until the bottom of the sixth inning. The Trojans had no one on base with two outs. 

Coahoma's Wyatt Bailey faced Mississippi Delta's Dawson Ivey. Ivey was down two strikes, but Bailey threw two pitches down the middle of the plate. There were two controversial calls that kept Ivey alive. Ivey then came through with a double. Ivey led Mississippi Delta with two hits in three at-bats.

Matt McCurley stepped up with an RBI single. Then Bailey threw a wild pitch that scored a run for the Trojans.

Korey Bell led the Mississippi Delta to victory on the pitcher's mound. He lasted seven innings, allowing three hits and zero runs while striking out five.

Bailey took the loss for Coahoma. He allowed five hits and two runs over six innings, striking out six and walking one.

Colton Norris, Marquellis Edgeston, and Deonteau Rieves each managed one hit to lead the Tigers.

"It's hard to get a win at someone else's park. You have to play great baseball to beat Mississippi Delta," said Coahoma Head Coach Lee Hodge. "We have to score more than they do and it just didn't fall together for us."

The Tigers go to (23-21, 11-15 MACJC) on the season. They will conclude the 2018 season and MACJC Conference play against Pearl River Community College. The game is set for noon, Saturday, May 5, 2018, at Eddie C. Smith Sportsplex. It will be part of a doubleheader followed by game two at 3:00 p.m.

Coahoma Community College will recognize the graduating sophomores of this year's team in a special presentation.
