Box Score CLARKSDALE- Crosstown rivals Coahoma and Northwest Mississippi were riding the waves of momentum in their most recent matchup. They battled each other in an MACJC doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Eddie C. Smith Sportsplex. Northwest came to Clarksdale on a four-game winning streak. Coahoma came off a signature win against Hinds Community College.
The Tigers and Rangers played two intense games, both coming down to the wire. Coahoma split the doubleheader winning (6-5) and losing (4-3).
In the 1st game, Coahoma took the game in dramatic fashion, with a 6-5 walk-off victory over Northwest.
The Tigers came back from a 5-3 deficit in the bottom of the ninth.
Colton Norris stepped up with a 2-RBI single tying the game 5-5. Zac Gilder's sacrifice fly scored the winning run.
In the second inning, Coahoma got their offense geared up when
Matthew Newcomb's sac fly scored one run.
Northwest (17-9, 7-5 MACJC) took a 2-1 lead in the third inning with a pair of RBI singles by Brant Blaylock and Grant McMinn.
Blaylock and McMinn got a pair of RBI singles in the fifth inning extending the lead to 4-2.
Joe Gee came through with an RBI single in the fifth inning cutting the lead to 4-3.
The Rangers got some insurance with a solo home run by Ben Van Cleve.
Northwest Mississippi saw the ball well during the game, racking up eight hits in the game. McMinn, Blaylock, and Hunter White each managed multiple hits.
Blaylock took the loss for Northwest. He surrendered three runs on four hits over two-thirds of an inning, walking one.
Rafael De Leon was credited with the victory for Coahoma. He went four innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out one.
Eduardo Munoz started the game for the Tigers. He lasted five innings, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out six and walking one. Reed Logsdon started the game for Northwest Mississippi. He went six innings, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out five.
Coahoma totaled seven hits. Norris and
Kyler Johnson all had multiple hits. Norris and Johnson all had two hits to lead the Tigers.
In the 2nd game, Northwest bounced back and avoided the sweep in a 4-3 victory.
Coahoma captured the lead 2-1 in the second inning. An error scored one run for the Tigers.
Northwest Mississippi CC took the 3-2 lead with two runs in the fourth inning. Will Brooks grounded out, scoring one run and Brooks Boolos grounded out, scoring one run.
Northwest scored one run in the top of the sixth when McMinn got an RBI single. Coahoma then answered when Zac Gilder hit a solo homer.
Northwest Mississippi racked up seven hits. McMinn and Van Cleve all managed multiple hits for the Rangers.
Harrison Sandridge earned the victory on the pitcher's mound for Northwest. He went five innings, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out four and walking zero. Drew Hurst threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Wyatt Bailey took the loss for Coahoma. He surrendered four runs on seven hits over seven innings, striking out six.
Gilder went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Tigers in hits.
"That's a great baseball team we played. We battled with that team, and I'm happy with the split," said Coahoma Head Coach
Lee Hodge. "I have never been associated with a team that will fight like this team fights. As long as we don't walk people and make the plays, offensively we're going to fight."
Coahoma goes to (16-14, 4-8 MACJC) on the season. They will continue MACJC Conference play against East Mississippi Community College. The game is set for 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Apr. 10, 2018, at Eddie C. Smith Sportsplex. It will be part of a doubleheader followed by game two at 3 p.m.
