Tigers Have Tough Day Against Bobcats

Box Score CLARKSDALE- The Coahoma Tigers Baseball Team has seen much success this season and had their toughest test to date against #3 Jones County on Saturday afternoon. JCJC came into the doubleheader on a 14 game winning streak. With that fact aside the Tigers were looking for their biggest win in school history.

The Bobcats (35-7, 19-4 MACJC) ultimately played to their #3 ranking in a 13-1 and 8-2 victory at Eddie C. Smith Sportsplex.

In the first game, Coahoma watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 13-1 loss.

Jones County scored on an RBI single by Luther Woullard in the first inning, an RBI single by Trace Henry in the second inning, and a 3-RBI single by Robbie Woody in the second inning. The Bobcats took an 8-0 lead.

The Tigers got on the scoreboard 8-1 with an Alexis Rodriguez RBI single.

The Bobcats soon pulled away with five runs in the seventh inning. The big inning was driven by a 2-RBI triple by R.J. Brown, an RBI single by Henry, a sac fly by Tate Pepper, and a groundout by Brandon Hale.

Jones County collected 17 hits on the day. Henry, Woody, Woullard, Brown, and Stephen Matthews all had multiple hits.

Cooper Brune earned the victory on the pitcher's mound for Jones County. He allowed six hits and one run over six innings, striking out 11. D.J. Alexander threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Austin Pace took the loss for Coahoma. He allowed 17 hits and 13 runs over six and two-thirds innings, striking out five.

Kyler Johnson led the Tigers with two hits in three at-bats.

In the second game, Coahoma had a tough time generating runs in an 8-2 loss.

The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning. Jones County took a 3-0 lead on an RBI single by Woody and an RBI double by Woullard.

Coahoma got on the scoreboard 4-1 in the fifth inning. Joe Gee came through with an RBI single.

Jones County puts the game out of reach with four runs in the sixth inning. Brown steps up with an RBI single. Jake Mason came through with a huge 3-run homer.

Jones County saw the ball well today, racking up 13 hits in the game. Mason, Woullard, Brown, and Miguel Morgan all managed multiple hits. Mason went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Bobcats in hits.

Jay Simpson was the winning pitcher for Jones County. He lasted six innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out four. Payton Harris threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Wyatt Bailey took the loss for Coahoma. He lasted two and one-third innings, allowing two hits and three runs.

Gee led the Tigers with two hits in three at-bats.

"They (Jones County) didn't do anything wrong. They are really good and we didn't do what we needed to do to win," said Coahoma Head Coach Lee Hodge. "We have to swing the bat. You don't win in this league unless you score runs."

Coahoma goes to (22-20, 10-14 MACJC) on the season. They will continue MACJC Conference play against Mississippi Delta Community College. The game is set for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, in Moorhead, MS. It will be part of a doubleheader followed by game two at 4 p.m.
