Box Score CLARKSDALE- Coahoma Baseball has been on the highest of highs this season with 21 wins and a chance at postseason play. The Tigers had to get over a long losing streak to Holmes Community College. Head Coach Lee Hodge has not beaten Holmes in his tenure. The Bulldogs gave Coahoma a hard time on Tuesday afternoon at Eddie C. Smith Sportsplex. The Tigers finally got over the hump in a 14-12 victory. Holmes came back strong and avoided the sweep in a 6-1 victory.
In the 1st game, Both pitching staffs had their hands full in a high-scoring affair where Coahoma survived Holmes, 14-12.
Holmes (18-22, 4-20 MACJC) took an early 4-0 lead. Cole Johnson stepped up with an RBI single. Colby Ellingburg followed up with a 2-RBI double.
Coahoma got on the scoreboard 4-1 when Hector Torres scored on a wild pitch.
The Bulldogs answered with four runs in the 3rd inning. Sage Mullins and Will Roberts got a pair of 2-RBI singles extending the lead to 8-1.
The Tigers rallied with five runs in the 3rd inning. Marquellis Edgeston came through with a 3-RBI triple cutting the lead to 8-6.
Coahoma took the lead 9-8 with three runs in the fourth inning. Joe Gee stepped up with an RBI single.
Holmes fought back in the 5th inning with an RBI single by Paul Green tying the game 9-9.
The Tigers came up big with three runs in the 5th inning. They took a 12-9 lead on an RBI triple from Torres.
The Bulldogs did not go way easy. Dane Bevell got a 2-RBI single cutting the lead to 12-11.
The Tigers scores two runs in the 7th inning. Edgeston and Alexis Rodriguez got a pair of RBI singles extending the lead to 14-11.
Bevell came through again with an RBI single in the 8th inning.
Holmes Community College racked up 15 hits. Bevell, Johnson, Green, Mullins, and Matt Warren all managed multiple hits.
Steven Lacey got the start for Holmes. He allowed ten hits and nine runs over three and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking zero. Alex Burt, Kendrick LeJeune, and Morgan Jarabica each contributed in relief.
Austin Pace took the win for Coahoma. He went six and a third innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits, striking out six and walking one. Rafael De Leon threw two-thirds of an inning in relief out of the bullpen. De Leon recorded the last two outs to earn the save.
Coahoma racked up 16 hits on the day. Gee, Edgeston, Torres, Deonteau Rieves, and Matthew Newcomb all managed multiple hits. Torres, Edgeston, and Gee all had three hits to lead the Tigers.
In the 2nd game, Coahoma fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 6-1 loss to Holmes.
Holmes got things moving 1-0 in the 2nd inning when a sacrifice bunt by Paul Green scored one run for Holmes.
The Bulldogs pulled away 3-0 in the 3rd inning with a 2-RBI single by LeJeune.
Coahoma got on the scoreboard in the 6th inning, when Zac Gilder grounded out and Edgeston scored.
Holmes totaled 11 hits in the game. Mullins, LeJeune, and Warren each collected multiple hits. Mullins went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead the Bulldogs in hits.
Jerod Bronson took the loss for Coahoma. He went seven innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits and striking out one.
Torres, Edgeston, and Gilder each managed one hit to lead the Tigers.
Coahoma goes to (22-18, 10-12 MACJC) on the season. They will continue MACJC Conference play against #3 Jones County Junior College. The game is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Eddie C. Smith Sportsplex. It will be part of a doubleheader followed by game two at 3 p.m.
