Box Score CLARKSDALE– Coahoma Community College Baseball continues to make great strides toward a successful 2018 season.
In an early season matchup, Central Baptist College (CBC) edged out a victory over the Tigers. CGC had hopes of ending the tiger's momentum, but Coahoma's offense scored plenty and often in (19-11 and 13-3) victories Thursday afternoon.
In the 1st game, both teams went at each other head-to-head. Zac Gilder came to the ballpark and meant business, tallying four hits and leading Coahoma to a 19-11 win. Gilder doubled in the first, singled in the first, doubled in the fourth, and doubled in the fifth.
Central Baptist hit a grand slam home run to take an early 5-0 lead.
Coahoma grabbed the lead 9-5. They scored on a single by Colton Norris in the first inning, a single by Kyler Johnson in the first inning, a single by Joe Gee in the first inning, a single by Gilder in the first inning, a double by Hector Torres in the first inning.
The Mustangs didn't give up easily. Brandon Higgenbotham got an RBI double. Andrew Lipscomb got an RBI single cutting the lead to 9-7.
Coahoma answered with Matthew Bumpous, and Joe Gee securing a pair of RBI singles extending the lead to 13-7.
Cody Duffey started the game for Central Baptist. He lasted three and two-thirds innings, allowing 12 hits and 17 runs while striking out three. Dylan Bradley threw two and a third innings out of the bullpen.
Central Baptist totaled 12 hits in the game. Oliva, Andrew Lipscomb, Michael Smith, and Brandon Higgenbotham each collected multiple hits for Central Baptist College.
Luke Hobson was credited with the victory for Coahoma. He went two and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out five. Jerod Bronson, Dalton Elliott, and Dalton Cohea all put in work on the pitcher's mound in relief out of the bullpen, steering their team towards the victory.
Coahoma racked up 15 hits. Gilder, Gee, Norris, Torres, and Marquellus Edgeston all had multiple hits. Gilder led the Tigers with four hits in five at-bats. Alexis Rodriguez had three stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with eight stolen bases.
In the 2nd game, Coahoma defeated Central Baptist 13-3 thanks to a timely ten runs in a big first inning. Edgeston, Norris, Rodriguez, Gee, and Torres each had RBIs in the frame.
Central Baptist took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, when Higgenbotham singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.
Coahoma explodes for ten runs in the 1st inning. Torres hits a three-run homer giving the Tigers a commanding 10-1 lead.
Ku'Ron Summons started the game for Central Baptist. He went one-third of an inning, allowing six runs on one hit. Higgenbotham and Ridge Riley entered the game as relief, throwing two and two-thirds innings and one and two-thirds innings respectively.
Austin Pace was credited with the victory for Coahoma. He allowed five hits and three runs over five innings, striking out five.
Coahoma saw the ball well, racking up nine hits in the game. Gee, Torres, and Norris all managed multiple hits. Gee went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Tigers in hits.
Coahoma goes to 10-2 on the season. They will continue their non-conference schedule against Mississippi Delta Community College. The game is set for 11 a.m. on Friday, March 9, 2018, in Senatobia, MS. The Tigers will also play against Northwest Mississippi Community College at 5 p.m.
