Tiger’s Mistakes Cost Them Against Bulldogs

Box Score PERKINSTON- Coahoma Community College had their longest road trip of the season. The Tigers traveled six hours to take on #18 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. CCC had hopes of bringing a victory home, but huge mistakes hampered them. The Bulldogs took advantages of Coahoma's miscalculations; sweeping the Tigers in the doubleheader (10-3 and 12-2).

In the 1st game, Coahoma fell 10-3 to Mississippi Gulf Coast despite out-hitting them ten to nine.

The Tigers struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing the Bulldogs, giving up ten runs.

CCC got their offense going early with a solo home run and an RBI single by Alexis Rodriguez. Coahoma took an early 3-0 lead.

Mississippi Gulf Coast (20-4, 4-2 MACJC) pulled away for good with five runs in the fourth inning. Logan McGrew and Ike Williams got a pair of RBI doubles. Preston Stringer got a 2 RBI single to give the Bulldogs a 5-3 lead.

Alden Davis put the game out of reach with a solo home run.

Mississippi Gulf Coast collected nine hits. Williams, McGrew, and Cullan O'Shea all had multiple hits.

Ty Barnes was credited with the victory for Mississippi Gulf Coast. He allowed nine hits and three runs over eight innings, striking out eight. Grant Atwood threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Luke Hobson took the loss for Coahoma. Justin Fisher started the game for the Tigers. He lasted three and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits and three runs while striking out two.

Coahoma racked up ten hits on the day. Rodriguez, Deonteau Rieves, Zac Gilder, and Kyler Johnson each racked up multiple hits. Johnson, Rodriguez, Gilder, and Rieves all had two hits to lead the Tigers.

In the 2nd game, Coahoma had a good start again but had an abrupt finish in a 12-2 loss.

The Tigers opened up scoring in the first inning. Zac Gilder hit a solo homer giving Coahoma a 1-0 lead.

Coahoma's defense made some a huge mistake to get the Bulldogs going. An infield error by Deonteau Rieves caused two runs to score giving Mississippi Gulf Coast a 3-1 lead.

The Bulldogs scored five runs in the third inning. The big inning came thanks to an RBI triple by Brandon Parker, an RBI single by McGrew, and a 3-run home run by O'Shea. O'Shea puts the game out of reach with Another 3-run homer. He was 2 for 3 with two home runs and six RBIs.

Mississippi Gulf Coast totaled 11 hits. Davis, O'Shea, and McGrew all managed multiple hits. Davis led the Bulldogs with three hits in three at-bats.

Dustan Dille pitched Mississippi Gulf Coast to victory. He surrendered two runs on six hits over five innings, striking out six and walking one.

Eduardo Munoz took the loss for Coahoma. He went two and a third innings, allowing seven runs on five hits, striking out one and walking zero.

Alexis Rodriguez went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Tigers in hits.

"We just didn't play well but they did. The teams we play are going to throw strikes and make the plays. If they don't, we end up on the winning side," said Coahoma Head Coach Lee Hodge. "We didn't throw the ball well today, didn't hit the ball and didn't make the plays. You're going to get embarrassed in this conference if you don't."

Coahoma goes to (13-11, 1-5 MACJC) on the season. They will continue MACJC Conference play against Northeast Mississippi Community College. The game is set for 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 27, 2018, at Eddie C Smith Sportsplex. It will be part of a doubleheader followed by game two at 3 p.m.
