Tigers Gets Rude Awakening Against #5 Warriors

Box Score DECATUR– The Coahoma Community College Baseball team has been great strides to success early in the 2018 season; preparing them to take on the competitiveness of the MACJC Conference. The Tigers had their first big test at #5 East Central Community College. CCC entered the game with a promising start, but big mistakes would ultimately cost them in the end. The ECCC Warriors took advantage of Coahoma's errors and swept the doubleheader (8-5 and 7-0).

In the 1st game, East Central survived a late ninth-inning comeback by Coahoma in an 8-5 victory.

CCC got on the board in the first inning with Marquellus Edgeston securing an RBI triple; giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

East Central (13-5, 2-0 MACJC) knotted the game up 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning as George Farid got an RBI single.

The Warriors would soon pull away with two runs in the fourth inning. Jacob Edwards got a 2 RBI single; giving East Central a 3-1 lead. ECCC would go on to score seven runs in three innings.

Coahoma tried its best to rally; notching four runs in the ninth inning. Zac Gilder and Hector Torres powered the big inning with RBIs. The Tigers had runners at 1st and 2nd with two outs and a chance to cut ECCC's lead. Matthew Newcomb struck out to end the game for CCC.

Payton Griffin took the win for East Central; making sizeable contributions to ECCC's performance. Griffin allowed four hits and one run over eight innings, striking out five. Austin Braswell and Tanner Elders entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

East Central tallied ten hits on the day. Farid, Deon Leflore, Edwards, Will Ross, and Davis Lott all managed multiple hits.

Eduardo Munoz took the loss for Coahoma. He lasted five innings; allowing eight hits and six runs while striking out five and walking one.

Coahoma tallied nine hits in the game. Edgeston, Torres and Christopher Pittman each managed multiple hits, each collected two hits to lead the Tigers.

In the 2nd game, the Tigers fell behind early and couldn't recover; resulting in a 7-0 loss. East Central scored on an error in the first inning, a single by George Farid in the first inning, a single by Wyatt Ball in the first inning, an error in the first inning, and a home run by Jacob Edwards in the second inning.

The Warriors scored two more runs in the fifth inning with a Ross 2 RBI double.

The Tigers struggled to contain the high-powered offense of East Central, giving up seven runs.

East Central had six hits in the game, thanks to the efforts of Edwards and Farid.

Dylan Marsh was credited with the victory for East Central. He surrendered zero runs on one hit over seven innings, striking out nine and walking zero.

Wyatt Bailey took the loss for Coahoma. He surrendered five runs on five hits over three and third innings, striking out four and walking zero.

Gilder went 1-for-2 at the plate to lead the Tigers in hits.

Head Coach Lee Hodge believes despite this setback his team is a force in the MACJC.

"I thought we were a good defensive team and I think we still can be," said Hodge. "There's a reason why East Central is #5 in the nation. They make all the big plays to win."

Coahoma goes to (12-8, 0-2 MACJC) on the season.
