Tigers Have Ups and Downs Against Jacks

HARRISON– Coahoma Community College was looking to finish strong on their road trip to Arkansas. They took on a tough team in Dakota College of Bottineau on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers played well early, but the Jacks flipped the script at the end. They split the doubleheader winning the 1st game 17-5 but losing the 2nd game 13-2.

In the 1st game, Alexis Rodriguez was dialed in at the plate on Tuesday, tallying four hits and leading Coahoma to a 17-5 win over Dakota College. Rodriguez singled in the second, doubled in the third, singled in the seventh, and homered in the seventh.

Coahoma got things started taking a 1-0 in the first inning when Hector Torres hit a solo homer. They struck again in the second inning with six runs. Marquellis Edgeston got a 3-run homer to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead.

Trevor Feeney got things going for Dakota with a solo homer and a 2 RBI single. Jordan Padilla got an RBI single cutting the lead to 7-4. 

The Jacks made things interesting in the 6th inning when Nick Sumstine got an RBI single cutting the lead to 7-5.

Coahoma put the game out of reach with ten runs in the seventh inning. Their big bats were led by Torres, Rodriguez, Deonteau Rieves, Matthew Bumpous, Christopher Pittman, Colton Norris, and, all driving in runs in the inning. Pittman got a 3-run homer and Rodriguez got a 2-run homer that capped off an explosive game. The Tigers tallied four home runs on the day.

Dakota College tallied 11 hits on the day. Feeney, Padilla, Sumstine, and Victor Terrero all collected multiple hits. Feeney went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Jacks.

Carter Sorenson got the start for Dakota College. He went six and a third innings, allowing 12 runs on 11 hits and striking out four. Mark Fredericks threw two-thirds of an inning out of the bullpen.

Rafael De Leon took the win for Coahoma. He went five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking zero. Jerod Bronson threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Coahoma scattered 16 hits in the game. Rodriguez, Torres, Bumpous, and Joe Gee all managed multiple hits. Rodriguez led the Tigers with four hits in five at-bats.

In the 2nd game, Coahoma fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 13-2 loss to Dakota College. They struggled to contain the high-powered offense of the Jacks, giving up 13 runs.

Dakota College fired up the offense in the first inning, when Dylan Dougher got a 2-run homer on the first pitch of the at-bat, taking a 2-0 lead.

Then the Jacks scored ten runs in the second inning. The offensive firepower was led by Dougher, Terrero, Feeney, Nick Sumstine, and Ryan Moormeier, who all drove in runs.

Dakota College mashed two home runs on the day. Dougher went for the long ball in the first inning. Moormeier had a dinger in the second inning. They also racked up seven hits on the day. Dougher and Tyler LeGault each collected multiple hits.

Eduardo Vega toed the rubber for Dakota College. He surrendered two runs on three hits over five innings, striking out two.

Austin Pace toed the rubber for Coahoma. He lasted one inning, allowing three hits and four runs while walking one. Justin Fisher, Tyler Buckner, and Davin Hetts each contributed in relief.

Bumpous, Pittman, and Rieves each managed one hit to lead the Tigers.

Coahoma goes to 12-6 on the season. They will begin MACJC Conference play against East Central Community College. The game is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 17, 2018, in Decatur, MS.
