Tigers Have Good Showing In Three-Team Showcase

SENATOBIA– Coahoma Community College Baseball played two big non-conference matchups on Friday. They went against two teams from the MACJC Conference in a round robin showcase. Both games tested Coahoma's intensity and character. The Tigers had a successful day winning the first game but losing a classic in the second game.

In the 1st matchup, Coahoma was victorious over Mississippi Delta Community College 9-5. The Tigers got things moving in the first inning with Marquellus Edgeston getting an RBI double giving Coahoma a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers tallied five runs in the second inning. Christopher Pittman, Joe Gee, and Edgeston each had RBIs in the frame. They had their biggest lead at 8-3.

Mississippi Delta (6-6) got back in the game quickly when Tyler Jones got an RBI triple. Markarius Lee got an RBI single cutting the lead to 8-5.

Christopher Pittman came up big with an RBI single. The Trojans had one more chance with runners at 1st and 2nd with one out. Devontae Rhodes hit into a game-ending double play giving Coahoma the victory.

Carson Forrester led things off on the hill for Mississippi Delta. He went one and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs on three hits, striking out two and walking one. Wesley Ross and Albert Hughes entered the game as relief, throwing three and a third innings and two innings respectively.

Mississippi Delta CC tallied 12 hits. Dawson Ivey, Markarius Lee, and Parker Lane all managed multiple hits for Mississippi Delta CC. Ivey led Mississippi Delta CC with three hits in four at bats.

Rafael De Leon pitched Coahoma to victory. He lasted four and two-thirds innings, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out two and walking one. Eduardo Munoz threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Coahoma totaled 11 hits in the game. Pittman, Gee, and Edgeston all had multiple hits. Pittman went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Tigers.

In the nightcap, a walk-off left the Tigers on the wrong end of a 5-4 defeat to Northwest Mississippi Community College on Friday. The game was tied at four with Northwest batting in the bottom of the seventh when Brant Blaylock singled on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring one run.

Coahoma got things started in the second inning. Christopher Pittman and Joe Gee were hit by a pitch, driving in 2 runs to take a 2-0 lead. 

They had the lead until the 4th inning when the Rangers got things in gear. Hayden Leatherwood got an RBI single cutting the lead to 2-1.

Northwest (10-4) took the lead 3-2 in the 5th inning. Dakota Dailey stepped up with an RBI double. 

Coahoma answered with an RBI single by Deonteau Rieves tying the game 3-3. The Rangers had a 4-3 lead going into the 7th inning. Hector Torres scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 4-4.

Jake Tyrone was on the mound for Northwest. He lasted one and one-third innings, allowing one hit and two runs while striking out one.

Northwest collected 11 hits on the day. Hunter White and Dakota Dailey all managed multiple hits.

Wyatt Bailey got the start for Coahoma. He went six and a third innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits and striking out three.

Edgeston, Gee, Rieves, Zac Gilder, and Kyler Johnson each collected one hit to lead the Tigers.

"I absolutely love this team. They fight and root for each other," said Coahoma Head Coach Lee Hodge. "We came up with big hits all day. The kind of game the MACJC plays is outstanding baseball."

Coahoma goes to 11-3 on the season. They will continue their non-conference schedule against North Arkansas College. The game is set for 1 p.m. on Monday, March 12, 2018, in Harrison, AR.
