Tiger Offense Gets Going, Sweeping Toppers

CLARKSDALE– The Coahoma Baseball team got their offense going and played tremendous defense; sweeping Blue Mountain College 8-2, and 6-0 on Tuesday Afternoon at Eddie C. Smith Sportsplex.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Coahoma had a slow start but finished strong winning 8-2. Blue Mountain College opened up scoring in the first inning, when Payton Arnold singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run taking a 1-0 lead. Colby Dill got a RBI single extending the lead to 2-0.

Coahoma settled down and soon got things going. They scored two runs in the fourth inning.  Blue Mountain had an error in the outfield that caused two runs to score for Coahoma. The Tigers took a 3-2 lead.

Coahoma pulled away with three runs in the sixth inning. The big inning was thanks to a single by Kyler Johnson, a groundout by Zac Gilder, and an error on a ball put in play by Matthew Newcomb.

Wyatt Bailey got the start for the Tigers. He lasted six innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out eight and walking zero.

Brady Jones got the start for Blue Mountain College. He lasted four and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits and five runs while striking out one. Harrison Moss threw one and one-third innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Coahoma collected seven hits. Johnson and Joe Gee each managed multiple hits leading the Tigers. Gee and Johnson each collected two hits. The Tigers tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Hector Torres led the way with four.

In game two, Coahoma's pitching and defense put on a show in a 6-0 victory. Two pitchers combined to throw a one-hit shutout. Justin Fisher (1-0) went six innings, allowing zero runs on one hit and striking out eight. Brandon Herring finished the Toppers with outs in the seventh inning for the save.

Coahoma got on the board in the first inning when Marquellus Edgeston singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run taking a 1-0 lead. Gee gets an RBI single in the second inning extending the lead to 2-0. 

The Tigers secured the victory thanks to four runs in the sixth inning. They led with triples by Edgeston and Norris. Then Johnson and Bumpous came right behind them with singles. They all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.

Chris Lockhart started for Blue Mountain College. He surrendered six runs on ten hits over five and two-thirds innings, striking out one and walking one. Robert Jones threw one-third of an inning out of the bullpen.

Coahoma's offense totaled 11 hits. Gilder, Edgeston, and Bumpous each collected multiple hits. They all had two hits to lead the Tigers.

Hiltz went 1-for-3 at the plate to lead Blue Mountain College.

Coahoma goes to 3-1 on the season. They will continue their nonconference schedule against  Central Baptist College. The game is set for 12 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, in Conway, AR.

It will be part of a doubleheader followed by game two at 3 p.m.
