CCC Baseball Closes Season Against Meridian, Jones

Team nearly upsets No. 2 squad in the nation

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

CLARKSDALE - CCC Baseball concluded its season last week with doubleheaders at Meridian and vs. Jones County. The team was swept 13-3 and 10-0 at No. 8 Meridian before losing late leads against the No. 2 Bobcats, falling 7-5 and 15-12.

Landon Fullilove had 2 hits in 6 at-bats, and LaTalo Newson homered but their efforts were not enough to stop a powerful Meridian offense that capitalized for 23 runs over 2 games to take the home sweep Tuesday. The Eagles' lineup in Game 1 would feature 6 different players with multiple hits, as the team scored 9 times in the 5th and 6th to end the game via run-rule in the 7th.

They would get a strong pitching performance from Chandler Mullins in Game 2. He held Coahoma to just 2 hits and got plenty of support from his offense, who capitalized for 10 runs to run away with the game.

The Tigers returned home and put up a valiant fight against the No. 2 team in the nation, Jones County on Thursday. Kris Peet overcame a rocky start to turn in a solid 8-inning pitching performance that would feature him scattering 6 hits and 5 runs against the high-octane Jones attack.

CCC bats would break a 3-run tie in the 6th on an RBI base hit by Tyler Crouch and extend the lead on an RBI base hit by Hayden Tapper in the 8th.

But the 5-3 lead would not hold. Facing Peet and then Dustin Allen in the 9th, Jones turned on the gas. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, they got a 2-RBI single by Mason Irby to tie the game. On the next pitch, Tanner Huddleston would give them the lead with a 2-RBI double to right-center. They would not relinquish the 7-5 advantage in the final inning.

In Game 2, Allen got the ball to start. The righty surrendered 4 runs over his first 3 innings, but an offensive explosion in the bottom of the 3rd by the Tigers seemed to bail him out. The team got key 3-RBI doubles from both Lowell Haney and Tanner White to propel them to a 9-run frame.

The Bobcats refused to go quietly though. They scored twice in the 6th and then in their 7th and final turn at-bat in regular play would post a 9-run inning of their own to overcome a 6-run deficit and build a 15-12 lead behind a decisive 3-RBI double by outfielder Fred Franklin. They would hold on for their 40th victory of the season. Their wins clinched them the top spot in the MACJC.

CCC finishes the season 13-32-1 and 7-21 in MACJC play.
