Box Score CLARKSDALE - Tiger Baseball earned a split with Northwest Tuesday at the Eddie C. Smith Sportsplex, walking off in Game 2 on a sacrifice fly by Adam Cook that salvaged a 5-4 win. The victory pushed the Tigers to 4 wins in MACJC play.
Game 1 was not particularly kind to a Tiger team searching for its 10th overall victory of the season. The Rangers, who came in 11-7 overall and 3-3 in MACJC play, tagged CCC starter Latalo Newson for 4 runs on 5 hits in the 1st inning and did not look back, cruising to an 11-0 victory over the Tigers in 7 innings. The visitors enjoyed 12 hits in Game 1 and rode a strong start that featured 6 innings of scoreless ball from Peyton Plumlee.
Game 2 though was a different story. Lowell Haney and Dustin Allen would prove clutch for the Tigers in their quest for redemption against the rivals from Senatobia. Haney drove in the 1st run of the game in the 3rd on a double to left center to score Wesley Dew. He would come in on a passed ball in the same frame to build a 2-0 lead for starter Allen.
The righty on the mound did not disappoint, holding Northwest scoreless over the first three frames. With the team leading 2-1 in the top of the fourth, Allen induced a key double play with 2 Rangers aboard to escape trouble. He would finish with 7 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 5 K and 2 BB on his resume.
On the strength of Allen's strong performance and an RBI fielder's choice by Zach Morris, the Tigers took a 3-2 lead into the 7th and final inning. The Rangers took advantage of two Tiger errors to go ahead 4-3, but the CCC bats refused to die. A leadoff hit by Wesley Dew was followed by a one-out RBI single by Haney to tie the score. When the Ranger center fielder slipped trying to make the play on Haney's base hit and the ball rolled past, the speedy leadoff man was able to advantage and advance all the way to 3rd.
From there, it was Adam Cook's turn to once again be the hero. Batting with the bases loaded after a pair of intentional walks, Cook, who put a ball in play to help the Tigers walk off the Pearl River Wildcats on March 18th, lifted a fly to right that allowed Haney to tag ninety feet for the winning run.
With the split, the Tigers and Rangers each stand at 4-4 in conference play. CCC travels to Biloxi to take on MS Gulf Coast (13-7, 4-2 MACJC) Friday at MGM Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4 pm.
