Box Score GOODMAN- Coahoma Community College traveled south for its final game of the 2019 football season against Holmes Community College on Thursday afternoon. The Bulldogs recognized their chance at a spot in the MACJC Playoffs. The Tigers sought to finish the season strong with victory, to spoil Holmes' playoff hopes on their homecoming.
Coahoma played with ruthless aggression in the first half, but Holmes dominated with an explosive second half in a 49-16 victory at Ras Branch Field.
The Tigers' defense set the tone by forcing a Dylan Kelly fumble.
Dewayne Betts recovered the fumble at the 33-yard line.
They took advantage of the turnover when
Joseph Johnson connected with
KeAundre McCullough for 24 yards toward the 5-yard line. Then Betts scored a one-yard touchdown, giving Coahoma an 8-0 lead.
Holmes bounced back with a 25-yard touchdown by Kelly, which cut the lead to 8-7. Then Devontaye Bankston scored an 8-yard touchdown that boosted the Bulldogs to a 14-8 lead.
Coahoma resorted to their trick bag when
Walter Taylor connected with
Calijawon Johnson on a fake punt to the 17-yard line. Tahj Tolbert connected with
Josh Stevenson for 18 yards toward the 4-yard line. Betts scored a two-yard touchdown and a two-point conversion to give the Tigers a 16-14 lead.
The Bulldogs answered with a 65-yard drive on five plays. Kyren Batey connected with Martavius Dill for an 11-yard touchdown. Holmes raised the lead to 21-16 at the half.
The Tigers made some critical mistakes at the start of the second half. Taylor recovered a high snap on the punt attempt and tacked inside the 9-yard line.
Holmes took advantage of a 9-yard touchdown by Batey and extended the lead to 28-16.
Coahoma went on a very productive 50-yard drive. Betts was stopped short on 4th down and one at the 25-yard line.
The Bulldogs took charge afterward, setting the score at 35-16 with a nine-yard touchdown by Terry Bryant. They accumulated 28 unanswered points in the second half.
Holmes totaled 467 total yards, composed of 456 rushing yards and 11 passing yards. Batey led the Bulldogs with nine carries for 103 yards, 1 of 3 passes for 11 yards, and two touchdowns. Kelly sprinted nine carries for 101 yards and a touchdown. Bryant contributed 11 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown. Bankston ran six carries for 65 yards and two touchdowns.
Coahoma calculated 455 total yards, including 448 passing yards and 7 rushing yards. Johnson led the Tigers with 34 of 52 passes for 363 yards.
Deldrionn Amos secured 13 catches for 147 yards. McCullough tallied nine catches for 98 yards. Betts had four carries for six yards and two touchdowns.
The Tigers finished the 2019 football season (1-8, 0-6 MACJC North).
