Box Score CLARKSDALE- No. 5 Northwest Mississippi rolled into the James E. Miller stadium looking to recover from a loss to the no. 1 team in the nation. Coahoma had a once in a lifetime opportunity to knock off a top 5 team at home. The Rangers survived an outstanding effort from the Tigers in a 35-24 victory on Thursday night.
Coahoma had their best start of the season by taking an early 14-0 lead.
Myron Norfleet (7 yards) and
Jaylin Jones (1 yard) scored a pair of touchdowns.
Northwest got on the scoreboard when Jacob Free connected with Braden Smith for an eight-yard touchdown cutting the lead to 14-7.
The Tigers answered with a 32-yard field goal by
Chasten Lamb extending the lead to 17-7.
Then the Rangers went on an 86-yard drive in 10 plays. Chris Calvert scored a five-yard touchdown cutting the lead to 17-14.
Jaxton Carson scored a two-yard touchdown giving Northwest a 21-17 lead.
Coahoma's Special Teams came up big when a high snap got away from Chris Taylor and
Bobbieal Ellzey made the stop at the Northwest 11-yard line.
Norfleet connected with
Stefan Harmon for a 12-yard touchdown giving the Tigers a 24-21 lead at the half.
Both teams were in a defensive struggle starting the second half. Northwest finally settled down and took control. Free connected with JaVonta Payton for a 27-yard touchdown to take a 28-24 lead.
The Rangers put the game away in the 4th quarter. Free connected with Maurice Toney for 44 yards to the Northwest one-yard line. Urriah Shephard punched in a one-yard touchdown.
Northwest had 356 yards of total offense including 323 passing yards and 33 rushing yards. Free led the Rangers with 19 of 30 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns. Carson finished with 13 carries for 49 yards and a touchdown. Toney had two catches for 103 yards.
Coahoma had 368 yards of total offense including 230 passing yards and 138 rushing yards. Norfleet led the Tigers with 18 of 36 passes for 230 yards, 23 carries for 82 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Harmon finished with five catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. Jones had 10 carries for 40 yards and a touchdown.
"The kids came out ready to play. We don't have any quit on this football team," said Coahoma Head Coach
Steven Miller. "They're going to play until the horn blows. It can be the first or last nine games, they are going to play hard."
Northwest Mississippi goes to (6-1, 3-1 MACJC North) on the season. They will play Northeast Mississippi on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018, in Senatobia, MS.
Coahoma goes to (0-7, 0-4 MACJC North) on the season. They will continue the MACJC North Division play against no. 1 East Mississippi this Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018.
