There's something big brewing in Clarksdale, MS. Coahoma Community College is 1-0 and on a two game winning streak.
The Tigers maintained their winning ways in a 35-20 victory over Southwest Mississippi Community College last week.
Now, they have to focus on a big home opener against No.18 ranked Copiah-Lincoln Community College (Co-Lin) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, in the James E. Miller Stadium.
Head Coach
Steven Miller is keeping his team humble and hungry to end a long losing streak at home.
"The kids got to understand that opponents are going to get tougher throughout the year," Miller said. "We have to prepare every week to get better."
Coahoma will look to explode on offense with
Josh Johnson of Opelika, AL,
Trey Mitchell of Knoxville, TN and
Jaylin Jones of Bay Springs, MS.
Last week, Johnson had 27 carries for 127 yards, two catches for 20 yards and two touchdown. He is CCC football offensive "Athlete of the Week."
Mitchell was 17 of 32 for 277 yards and earned two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Jones had 10 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown.
Tigers defense will look to Linebacker
Cecil Cherry of Frostproof, FL.
Cherry is the MACJC Defensive Player of the Week and is the defensive "Athlete of the Week."
Last week, he had 13 tackles (12 solo), two tackles for loss, two pass breakups and one interception.
Tony Bowman of Tunica, MS also created havoc on the field with six tackles, two tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a safety.
Co-Lin (1-0) is coming off a 31-7 victory over Mississippi Delta Community College.
The Wolves offense looks to the trio of quarterback Woody Barrett, running backs Deion Dampier and Rico Owens.
Last week Barrett was 4 of 13 for 73 yards. Dampier led the way with 21 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown. Owens had 12 carries for 52 yards and a touchdown.
Co-Lin's defense is big and fast up front. They are led by Paul Wilson Jr. and Graham Eklund.
Tiger Nation is looking forward to a big game on Thursday.
"This game is a bigger magnitude because of the team history," said Miller. "We could put a stamp on this program by beating a successful program, especially a top-ranked team."
