Coahoma Community College played really hard against Jones County Junior College last, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers took a 33-16 loss. This week, CCC will travel to face one of the toughest teams in the MACJC Conference—Holmes Community College.
Holmes is currently 3-0 on the season and tied for 7th in the NJCAA rankings.
Coahoma had a tough start last week, down 12-0 in the first quarter, but the Tigers came back to cut the lead to 12-10 at the half.
Still, they couldn't generate enough offense in the second half to continue the momentum.
The Tigers accumulated 243 yards of total offense.
Josh Johnson of Opelika, AL, led the Tigers with 24 carries for 106 yards. Johnson is 3rd in the MACJC in rushing averaging 112 yards per game.
Jaylin Jones of Bay Springs, MS, had four carries for 47 yards.
Trey Mitchell of Knoxville, TN was 7 of 23 for 64 yards and a rushing touchdown. Mitchell is 4th in the MACJC in passing averaging 181 yards per game.
The Tigers defense played really tough throughout the game, forcing three turnovers, including an interception by
Antonio Nelson and two fumble recoveries.
Davion Taylor and
Cecil Cherry also caused havoc all over the field. Cherry is 3rd in the MACJC in tackles averaging 10 tackles per game.
However, Coahoma gave up 353 yards total offense including 233 yards rushing.
With Holmes known for their powerful running games, Coahoma will have to show more discipline this week.
The Bulldogs lead the nation in rushing with 490 yards per game. They run a lot of the Wish Bone/Wing T offense and are led by a stable of backs who are willing to step up at anytime.
Cameryn Brent leads Holmes with 62 carries for 519 yards and seven touchdowns. Josh Dodd has 28 carries for 256 yards and two touchdowns. Jesse Wilson has 24 carries for 210 yards and four touchdowns, and Sanchez Berry has 14 carries for 136 yards and three touchdowns.
Last week, Holmes defeated Mississippi Delta Community College 29-0. The Bulldogs accumulated 490 total yards including 434 rushing yards. Brent led the way with 25 carries for 187 yards and three touchdowns. Dodd was 5 of 10 for 56 yards and four carries for 70 yards. Wilson had eight carries for 55 yards and a touchdown.
Coahoma Head Coach Steve Miller knows he has a tough task ahead of him, but he's up for the challenge.
"If you can get ahead on Holmes, you can take them out their game plan," Miller said. "If you don't give them time to run the ball, you can take them out their game."
Coahoma also has something prove in this game—that they can win on the road. The Tigers have won two straight games on the road, and they're trying to continue this streak and get back to a 500 record.
"It's most important to go 1-0 in the division," said Miller. "This will get us to the top tier of the division."
CCC at Holmes is set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in Goodman, MS. The game will broadcast live at www.coahomasports.com/watch or tune in at WCQC 91.3.
