Coahoma Community College was looking to make progress and get back to their winning ways Thursday night at the at James E. Miller Stadium while Jones County Junior College came to Clarksdale seeking for a big road win. Both teams fought hard for four intense quarters of football that ended with Jones County taking advantage of Coahoma's crucial mistakes in a 33-16 loss.
Jones County had a good start with two field goals by Kroeze (29,23). Then, the Bobcats took advantage of a big mistake for the Tigers with
Eric Moore misplaying the ball on the kickoff, running in the end zone and fumbling the football. Jordyn Bowlin recovered the fumble for a touchdown giving Jones County the lead 12-0.
Coahoma fought back with a Mujahed Ibrihim 28-yard field goal cutting the lead to 12-3. Then,
Trey Mitchell scored a one-yard touchdown, further cutting the lead to 12-10 at the half.
"I felt like we had momentum at the half," said Coahoma Head Coach
Steven Miller.
Jones County started taking control in the second half.
DeShawn Smith scampered for an 11-yard touchdown, increasing the lead to 19-10. Then, Scott Phillips scored a four-yard touchdown, giving the Bobcats a commanding 26-10 lead.
Coahoma's defense forced three turnovers, including an interception by
Antonio Nelson and two fumble recoveries.
Coahoma tried to get back in the game.
Kaelan Hall scored a 21-yard touchdown cutting the lead to 26-16. Jones County put the game out of reach when Detric Hawthorn scored an 18 yard touchdown.
Coahoma had accumulated 243 yards of total offense.
Josh Johnson led the Tigers with his third straight 100 yard game. He had 24 carries for 106 yards.
Jaylin Jones had four carries for 47 yards. Mitchell was 7 of 23 for 64 yards and a rushing touchdown.
Jones County accumulated 350 yards total offense. Phillips led the Bobcats 28 carries for 94 yards and a touchdown. Smith finished with six carries for 24 yards and a touchdown.
Hawthorn finished 3 of 4 for 58 yards, nine carries for 77 yards and a touchdown. Chris Weaver was 6 of 14 for 65 yards and an interception.
Coahoma fought hard throughout the game. Now they are preparing to move on to a crucial road trip at No. 7 Holmes Community College next week.
"We're going to have to play good defense next week," said Miller. "Our offense is coming around and cutting back on their mistakes. We must sustain our drives."
The game is set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21 in Goodman, MS.
