Coahoma Community College Football believes 2017 will be about the "Rise of the Tiger."
Last season, the Tigers ended a three-year losing streak in a 40-19 victory over Mississippi Delta Community College.
That victory gave Head Coach
Steven Miller and his coaching staff momentum going into the 2017 season.
"We're going to the season on a winning streak," said Miller. "The last game we played, it left a great taste in our mouth."
Coach Miller feels that this season could be huge for CCC and the city of Clarksdale.
He plans to use a different approach this season, leaning on his veterans to step their game up and prepare for an intense season.
"This is a highly anticipated season and expectations are even higher," said Miller. "We got the best team that we can put together. We're on the verge of something great."
Coahoma returns eight starters (five offense, three defense) including All American defensive back
Antonio Nelson of Montgomery Al; linebacker
Rejohn Franklin of Gulfport, MS; wide receivers
Jayshon Foster of Ferriday, LA and
Eric Moore of Greenwood, MS.
The Tigers has its biggest offensive line in recent years. CT Williams of Kosciusko, MS and
Maurice Collins of Greenwood, MS leads the offensive front that averages 6 feet 3 inches and 300 pounds.
Coach Miller had a whirlwind offseason in recruiting. He brought in a group of transfers and freshmen that could make a difference for the Tigers.
Linebacker
Cecil Cherry of Frostproof, FL comes to Coahoma with an edge from South Florida. Wide Receiver
Chris Claybrooks of Nashville,TN (Fort Scott Community College, Kansas) brings a lot speed and agility. Damion and Demone Kemp of Greensboro, GA (Troy University) bring a lot of experience on both sides of the ball.
Trey Mitchell of Knoxville, TN is slated to be the starting quarterback for Coahoma CC. He was recruited to a couple of Ivy League schools but chose to compete for the Tigers and the MACJC.
Coahoma opens the season on the road Thursday, Aug. 31, at Southwest Mississippi Community College.
Copiah Lincoln Community College comes to Clarkdale for the home opener Thursday, Sept. 7, at the James E. Miller Stadium.
This is the first of five home games for the Tigers. Jones Community College, Northeast Community College, Itawamba Community College and Mississippi Delta Community College (Homecoming) will be making their way to Coahoma this season. Tigers will also have some tough road games at Holmes Community College, Northwest Community College and East Mississippi Community College.
Coach Miller hopes that the experience and leadership of his team can finally bring a winning culture to Clarksdale.
"I'm here to make this football program a proud institution for the city and the college," said Miller. "Our goal is to win one game at a time. We'll try to obtain each one by winning games."
