Box Score SENATOBIA – Coahoma Community College worked hard all week to prepare for a challenging road game against Northwest Mississippi Community College. The Tigers had a promising start but couldn't cash it in. They were outmatched and outplayed in a 35-0 loss Thursday night at Bobby Franklin Field.
Chris Claybrooks gave the Tigers confidence with a 42-yard kickoff return to Coahoma's 45-yard line. Coahoma didn't get a first down on their first drive.
Northwest Mississippi (4-1, 3-1 MACJC North) struck first 7-0 when Jack Abraham connected to Jamario Dixon for a 79-yard touchdown.
Coahoma's defense keeps them in the game when Northwest Kicker Drake McCarter misses a 23-yard field goal.
Mujahad Ibrihim had a 45-yard punt that was downed at the Northwest nine-yard line. Then Northwest went on a 91-yard drive in eight plays. Monta Thomas scores a nine-yard touchdown extending the lead 14-0.
Coahoma tried to get a consistent drive going but
Josh Johnson gets stopped one yard short on 4th down and two inside the Tigers' 48-yard line.
Northwest takes advantage of the turnover when Abraham connected to Pro Wells for a 17-yard touchdown. Rangers take a 21-0 lead at the half.
Northwest went right back to work in the second half. Abraham connects with JaVonta Payton for a 19-yard touchdown giving the Rangers a commanding 28-0 lead.
The Rangers put the game away when Cole Rotenberry had a 38-yard punt return to the Coahoma's five-yard line. Then Quarderman Sloan scores a five-yard touchdown.
Northwest had 503 yards total offense including 240 yards rushing and 263 yards passing.
Abraham was 12 of 17 for 260 yards and three touchdowns. Sloan had 11 carries for 87 yards and a touchdown. Kevin Perkins had 12 carries for 57 yards. Thomas finished with 15 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown.
Wells had five catches for 85 yards and a touchdown. Rotenberry finished with four catches for 66 yards.
"Their offense is so diverse and balanced," said Coahoma Head Coach
Steven Miller. "They drove the length of the field and very rarely we give up long drives."
Coahoma had 157 yards of total offense including 38 yards rushing and 119 yards passing.
Trey Mitchell was 13 of 27 for 119 yards and two interceptions.
Kaelan Hall had seven carries for 28 yards.
Josh Johnson did not have one of his best games. He had 11 carries for 11 yards and three catches for 35 yards.
Jayshon Foster had four catches for 41 yards.
Chris Claybrooks had big game on special teams with five returns for 130 yards.
Cecil Cherry had his best game this season with 16 tackles including 11 solos, five assists and three tackles for loss.
Rejohn Franklin had a strong game after returning from a back injury. He had 12 tackles including eight solos, four assists and one tackle for loss.
Davion Taylor had nine tackles including 5 solos, four assists and two tackles for loss.
"We have a long way to go at Coahoma to beat top 20 teams," said Miller. "Inch by inch and week by week, we're going to get better. We're still positive that we can put some things together and get a couple of victories."
Coahoma is now 1-5 on the season and 0-3 in the MACJC North Division. Coahoma returns home to James E. Miller Stadium and takes on Itawamba Community College on Thursday, Oct. 12, at 7pm. The Tigers will be honoring the graduating sophomores on Sophomore Night.
