Coahoma Community College Football (1-4, 0-2 MACJC North) has been facing the toughest stretch this season. The Tigers had a chance to get a big win but came up short 27-10 against Northeast Mississippi Community College.
What could change these circumstances? A road victory against one of the toughest teams in the country. Coahoma will battle No.11 Northwest Mississippi Community College Thursday, Oct. 5, at 6:30 p.m. in Senatobia, MS.
A subpar second half last week, left Coahoma's players, coaches and fans stunned at the performance. Over the weekend, coaches and players had a team meeting to recollect and refresh their minds. They realized that the season is not over and that they still have the opportunity to finish strong.
"I have met with every individual, and everyone is on board," said Coahoma Head Coach
Steven Miller. "We worked so hard to try and get those victories. It was in our grasp and we let it get away.
Last week, the Tigers had 231 yards of total offense.
Josh Johnson (Opelika, AL) led the Tigers with 25 carries for 149-yards and a touchdown. He has four 100-yard games in five games. He's third in the MACJC in rushing with 117 carries for 540-yards and three touchdowns.
Coahoma is looking for more from their quarterback
Trey Mitchell (Knoxville, TN) and the rest of the offense. They were sacked seven times and had five turnovers.
Coahoma's defense continues to play hard but needs to make impacted plays that will change the game.
Davion Taylor (Magnolia, MS) and
Cecil Cherry (Frostproof, FL) are still plugging away on opposing offenses.
Randall Johnson (West Point, MS) and
Braxton Brown (Hattiesburg, MS) are emerging with their aggressive tackling and great coverage.
Rejohn Franklin (Gulfport, MS) will make his return after missing last week's game with a back injury.
Northwest Mississippi (3-1,2-1 MACJC North) is coming off a big 33-13 win over No. 3 Holmes Community College. They racked up 580 yards total offense, including 367 yards passing and 213 yards rushing.
Jack Abraham leads the Rangers with 1068 yards passing, eight touchdowns and five interceptions. Last week, Abraham was 20 of 26 for 367 yards and three touchdowns.
Monta Thomas and Kevin Perkins are a tough tandem in the backfield. Last week, Perkins had 16 carries for 106 yards. Thomas had 14 carries for 70 yards and two touchdowns.
Northwest's defense had a tremendous performance against Holmes. They held the Bulldogs to 9-of-16 passing for 115 yards and rushed for 206 yards.
They are led by Brandon Pierre, Hal Northern, Malik Sanders and Keith Brown Jr.
Coahoma is looking for that long awaited signature win to catapult this upcoming football program. Coach Miller hopes that everything can finally come together.
"We need to play a complete game on offense, defense and special teams," said Miller. "A big signature win against a ranked team will help morale of the players and it would be great for the program."
