CLARKSDALE – Coahoma Community College had a Happy Homecoming with a dominating and memorable performance that had the Coahoma fans and alumni buzzing. The Tigers had a strong finish to the 2017 season with a 40-0 victory against Mississippi Delta Community College (0-9, 0-6 MACJC North).
Coahoma struck first on a
Josh Johnson 10-yard touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. The Tigers struck again when
Trey Mitchell connected with
Eric Moore for a 65-yard touchdown to make it 13-0.
Coahoma had a big drive to close out the 1st half. They had a 66-yard drive on eight plays. Mitchell scored on a three yard touchdown to give the Tigers a 20-0 lead at the half.
The Tigers went back to work when Johnson scored on a two yard touchdown to extend the lead 27-0. Then Johnson ended a career day with another two yard touchdown, giving the Tigers a commanding 34-0 lead.
Johnson had a career high 31 carries, 321 yards and four touchdowns. He finished the season with 204 carries for 1101 yards and eight touchdowns, including six 100 yard games this season.
The Tigers put the game out of reach when
Kaelan Hall scored a two-yard touchdown. Hall finished with eight carries for 40 yards and a touchdown.
Coahoma had a season high 524 yards of total offense. That included 366 rushing yards and 158 passing yards. Mitchell was 8 of 16 for 135 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Coahoma's defense posted a shutout for the first time in six years. Their last shutout was a 26-0 victory over Mississippi Delta on October 27, 2011.
The Tigers finish the season 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the MACJC North. They had more wins this season than they've had in four years. Coahoma Head Coach
Steven Miller ended a three year losing streak last season. He has now ended a four year losing streak at James E. Miller Stadium.
This win by the Tigers gives Tiger Nation hope and momentum that this program is on the rise to be a success in the future.
