Indians Big Plays takes down Tigers

CLARKSDALE – Coahoma Community College honored the graduating Sophomores before Thursday night's game against Itawamba Community College. The Tigers had a promising start to the game but the Indians made crucial plays in a 30-14 victory at James E. Miller Stadium.

Coahoma's offense was very aggressive on the opening drive. They went on a 72-yard drive in nine plays and melting 5:01 off the clock. Josh Johnson (Opelika, AL) scores a three-yard touchdown giving Coahoma the lead 7-0.

"Johnson carried the ball very well on the first drive," said Coahoma Head Coach Steven Miller. "We had an opportunity to move the ball all night but we had penalties and negative plays that caused us to get behind the sticks."

Itawamba (4-3, 3-1 MACJC North) struck back 7-7 when Dan Ellington connected with Malik Honeycutt for a seven yard touchdown. Caleb Comer nailed a 20-yard field goal giving the Indians the lead 10-7 at the half.

Coahoma had a shaky start to the second half when Johnson fumbled on the carry and Itawamba recovered the fumble at the Indians' 41 yard line. Itawamba then took advantage with Comer kicking a 35-yard field goal, making the score 13-7.

Ellington was on target once again, connecting with Jamel Thomas for a 33-yard touchdown extending the Indians lead to 20-7.

Later he connected with Honeycutt for the second time on a 25-yard touchdown giving Itawamba a commanding 27-7 lead.

The Indians put the game away 30-7 with Comer making a 26-yard field goal.

Coahoma finally got back on the scoreboard with a two-yard touchdown by Tommy Butler (McComb, MS).

Itawamba had 414 yards of total offense including 318 passing yards and 96 rushing yards. Ellington led the Indians with 19 of 37 passes for 318 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.

Kadarius Forside had nine carries for 52 yards. Terry Williams had six catches for 89 yards. Thomas had three catches for 77 yards and a touchdown. Honeycutt had four catches for 62 yards and two touchdowns.

Coahoma had 393 yards total offense including 217 passing yards and 176 rushing yards. Johnson led the Tigers with 23 carries for a season high 160 yards and a touchdown. This is Johnson's fifth 100-yard game of the season.

Trey Mitchell (Knoxville, TN) was 15 of 28 for 162 yards. Eric Moore (Greenwood, MS) had seven catches for 66 yards. Jayshon Foster (Ferriday, LA) had five catches for 93 yards. Chris Claybrooks (Nashville, TN) had three catches for 33 yards and 195 return yards.

Coahoma is 1-6 on the season and 0-4 in the MACJC North Division. The Tigers will travel to Scooba, MS and take on the No. 1 team in the nation, East Mississippi Community College.

"We're going to run into an angry East Mississippi team no matter what," said Miller. "They lost a game that was crucial to their championship run. They are going to have a hard time rebounding from that. We're still looking for a victory no matter who we play."

The game is set for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21.
