Box Score MOORHEAD, MS — The Coahoma Community College defense played well enough to earn their first MACJC conference win of the season Thursday night, but Mississippi Delta took advantage of five Tiger turnovers to keep CCC at bay. Coahoma led 19-14 with 12:07 left to play in the third quarter, but the Trojans would take advantage of three late interceptions (five total on the night) to defeat Tigers 41-19 at James Randall Stadium in Moorhead.
The three late INTs thrown by CCC QB Anthony Mitchell Jr., all happened in the span of seven minutes. Take away those seven minutes and the game looked as if two missed Tiger extra points would decide the contest as both teams slugged it out between the 20's for much of the contest.
Coahoma got on the board quick as the Tiger defense stopped a 10-play Trojan drive at the CCC 35. A punt into the end zone by the Trojans brought the ball out to the 20. After a Trojan penalty and a pickup of three yards by
Christian Williams, Tiger quarterback
Mickey Ridley, Jr. hit
Marcel Williams for 25 yards in the middle of the field and Williams took it the rest of the way for a 73-yard touchdown pass. The Tigers were stopped attempting a 2-point conversion.
Ridley would complete seven of 13 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns before being lifted late in the second quarter with a sprained ankle. He would also rush for 62 yards on eight carries.
The Trojans got their first score of the night late in the opening quarter following an interception by Denarius Howard at the Tiger 45 that was returned to the 32. Three plays later Roshard Burney took the hand off and punched it in from 20 yards out.
Placeholder Devonte McPherson mishandled the PAT snap and without a rush by the Tigers, ran it in for a 2-point conversion.
Coahoma came back on the kickoff and found themselves at their own 40-yard line facing a third and 9 Ridley dropped back to pass, was chased back to his 25, broke a tackle, and found
Christian Williams along the Tiger sidelines for a 60-yard TD pass. The PAT by the Tigers'
Cody Spears hit the left upright, careened off the right upright, bounced off the cross bar and back to the field of play.
Christian Williams caught a pair of passes for 66 yards and
Marcel Williams caught three for 77.
On the kick-off, the Trojans scored again on one play as Quadre Butler took a pitchout from quarterback Devin Adams to go down the Trojan sidelines for a 71 yard touchdown. The PAT was no good and the score remained 14-12 Trojans to half time.
Adams finished the night going 17 of 29 for 164 yards. Burney had 103 yards and three scores on 16 carries. Butler picked up 145 yards on nine carries and found the end zone twice.
The Tigers opened the second half taking the kick off 76 yards in 6 plays capping the drive with an Anthony Mitchell to K'Shun Evans 25-yard pass. Mitchell, who replaced Ridley in the second quarter, went 9 of 23 for 121 yards, but suffered five interceptions, including the three in the fourth quarter that broke the game loose for Mississippi Delta.
Denarius Howard had three of the Trojans five interceptions, setting up two touchdowns.
Coahoma will be on the road again next Saturday (Sept. 27) in Booneville, MS hoping to play the role of spoiler to Northeast Community College's Homecoming festivities. The kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
