Box Score CLARKSDALE — There's not much to be said if the scoreboard says it all. East Mississippi Community College rolled into James E. Miller Stadium with four busses and a tractor-trailer rig and then rolled over Coahoma Community College 83-7.
The nation's top-ranked team, according to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll, and defending National Champions put up nearly 600 yards of offense — 370 through the air, while completely shutting down the Tigers offense.
Lions sophomore quarterback Chad Kelly, a transfer from Clemson, accounted for five of the scores — one rushing and four through the air. The nephew of former NFL QB Jim Kelly diced up the Tigers defense before being removed after the first half.
Coahoma's lone score came on a four-play, 65-yard march ending with Anthony Mitchell connecting with
K'shun Evans on an 11-yard touchdown pass. On the drive, Mitchell completed passes of 19 and 35 yards to sophomore
Damecio Ewing. Ewing would finish with three catches for 71 yards, and also 124 yards on six kickoff returns.
Coahoma's offensive line looked good despite the score. Mitchell had good pass protection, but the Lions defensive secondary was bruising. Mitchell completed just 6 of 21 passes for 101 yards.
According to the NJCAA, East Mississippi had not been penalized in its first two games. Against Coahoma they were fines 12 times for a total of 114 yards.
East Mississippi moved to 3-0 and Coahoma dropped to 0-3 on the young season. The Tigers will face Mississippi Delta in Moorhead This week. The Trojans are coming off a 50-0 loss to 11
th-ranked Copiah-Lincoln.
