CLARKSDALE, Miss. - As the Coahoma Community College football team prepares for its season finale this Thursday against Copiah-Lincoln Community College, the program is celebrating the achievements, resilience, and leadership of its 20 departing sophomores.
Navigating the challenging landscape of the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference, this veteran group helped establish the culture of Tiger football under head coach Larry Williams. From setting the tone in the locker room to producing milestone performances on the field, these sophomores left a definitive mark on the program.
Offensive firepower and trench leadership
The sophomore class has been the engine behind Coahoma's offensive production this season. Quarterbacks Jacob Clopton (#1) and Tierral Rials Jr. (#13) have directed the offense with poise all season. Clopton recently accounted for 138 passing yards and added an eight-yard rushing touchdown in the team's matchup against Northeast Mississippi.
The backfield has been anchored by the punishing rushing attack of Isaac Day (#0) and Prentavis Madison (#5). Both backs found the end zone in their last outing against Northeast, with Day punching in a six-yard score and Madison adding a two-yard touchdown run. Tight end Anthony Thurman (#41) provides a critical dual-threat presence, securing edge blocks for the rushing attack and moving the chains through the air.
That backfield production relies entirely on the grit of the sophomore offensive line. Cameron Chambers (#58), JaSean Miller (#65), and Rahim Johnson (#71) have protected the pocket and consistently opened running lanes against some of the top defensive fronts in the nation.
Defensive dominance and secondary communication
On the other side of the ball, the sophomore defensive front and secondary have set a physical standard. The defensive line, anchored by Jakarious Fields (#17), Derrion Gould (#18), and Lester Westbrooks (#54), relentlessly pressured opposing quarterbacks. Dacaris Brown (#90) and Antonio Gipson (#98) further fortify the trenches, with Brown coming off a powerful 10-yard sack in the recent matchup against Northeast Mississippi. Gould enters the final stretch maintaining the momentum of a dominant four-sack performance against Mississippi Delta earlier this month.
Behind the trenches, the secondary provides lockdown coverage and veteran communication. Defensive backs Deshaun Brooks (#10), Xaylen Henderson (#7), Brandon Mitchell (#8), Ardavius Harris (#19), and Arlanders Stovall (#24) have seen every passing concept the conference has to offer. Mitchell recently showcased the group's playmaking ability by securing a 32-yard interception return against Northeast Mississippi to stall a divisional opponent's drive. Harris also enters the finale coming off a team-leading seven-tackle performance last Saturday.
Special teams precision
Field position and special teams execution often decide close conference games, and Coahoma relies on two sophomores for unwavering consistency. Kicker Andrew Harrison (#30) and long snapper Christian Higgins (#45) execute their highly specialized roles with precision, delivering under pressure to keep the Tigers competitive in tight matchups.
As these 20 athletes take the field at James E. Miller Stadium for the final time on Thursday, they carry the respect of the coaching staff, the campus, and the Clarksdale community. They arrived looking for an opportunity and will leave having elevated the standard for the next generation of Tigers.
