(Clarksdale, Mississippi) – The Coahoma Community College softball program recently celebrated a powerful milestone that beautifully intertwined family, legacy, and athletics. Head Softball Coach Greg Wallace signed his daughter, Laney Wallace, to join the Lady Tigers for the upcoming season – a moment that will be remembered as one of the most meaningful in his coaching career.
Laney, outfielder and utility player, has built a reputation as an athlete who can do it all. Known for her ability to hit gap to gap with impressive pop in her bat, she brings consistency and power to the offensive lineup. Equally important is her versatility, as she is able to fill multiple positions on the field with confidence and skill. Coaches and teammates alike describe her as a selfless player and an incredible teammate, always ready to uplift others and lead by example.
Her accomplishments speak volumes. At Tunica Academy, Laney was a force behind her team's 2025 State Championship victory and played a vital role in securing three consecutive North State Championships (2023, 2024, 2025). Her outstanding performance earned her All-Division honors for three years straight, underscoring her impact at every stage of her high school career.
Laney has also honed her skills competing with Fast pitch Performance Academy's 18U team, facing top-tier talent from across the region. Her commitment to growth, her competitive spirit, and her drive to succeed have shaped her into one of the top softball prospects in her graduating class.
For Coach Wallace, who has dedicated his life to mentoring and developing young athletes, signing his daughter to play at Coahoma is a moment that goes far beyond athletics.
"This is a very special moment for me as a father and as a coach," Wallace shared, his voice filled with emotion. "I've watched Laney grow from a little girl with a glove that was almost bigger than her to an outstanding young woman who plays this game with heart, grit, and respect. Getting the chance to coach her at the collegiate level is a blessing I don't take for granted. I know what she's capable of, and I know how hard she's worked to earn this opportunity."
He also shared how proud he is of her character off the field.
"She's just a great person. She cares about her teammates, she cares about doing things the right way, and she carries herself with maturity and humility. Those are the traits that will make her successful both in softball and in life."
For Laney, playing under her father's leadership is equally meaningful.
"It's going to be special to be coached by my dad," she said. "He's always pushed me to be the best version of myself, not just as a player but as a person. I'm excited to represent Coahoma and play for him. This is where I want to be."
The signing marks the beginning of a new chapter not only in Laney's softball journey but in the Wallace family story. Their bond, strengthened by the game they both love, will continue to grow as they take on this collegiate season together.
With Laney's powerful bat, versatile defense, and positive leadership, the Lady Tigers are poised to add another layer of strength to their program. For Coach Wallace, every hit, catch, and victory will hold an added layer of meaning, knowing he is guiding his daughter through one of the most formative experiences of her life.
As the Lady Tigers prepare for the upcoming season, the Wallace family's story will stand as a reminder of what makes sports truly special: the way it brings people together, builds lifelong bonds, and creates memories that last far beyond the final out.
