Tigers Pen 23 on National Signing Day

The Coahoma Community College football program added 23 players to its ranks during National Signing Day, which took place on Wednesday, February 1.

So far, the 2023 recruiting roster includes a variety of explosive players, addressing critical needs on both offense and defense.

Coahoma added strength in the trenches this year, penning six linemen after losing several key players to graduation in December.

First-year head coach Terrence Metcalf said his coaching staff entered the recruiting season with their sights set on assembling a complete team, building upon what was already concrete with the program.

"We lost so many guys. So, our main goal was to replace positions. We filled the linebacker spots. We made sure to secure the offensive line, secured the quarterback position, and just filled our holes," said Metcalf.

At the conclusion of the 2022 season, Coahoma saw nine players receiving MACCC North Honors; recognitions that speak to the growth of the Clarksdale-based ball club.

With this in mind, Metcalf and his staff were strategic in their efforts.

"We've filled the void from our sophomores who have gone on to other places," he added. "We looked to fill the roster with big, athletic guys who can play the mike, cover the middle of the field, and make plays happen."

Metcalf believes that the signees are a perfect fit for the current Tiger roster.

"I really feel like by adding these guys to the group that we already have is huge. Our group is disciplined, on time, and does things the right way," said Metcalf. "So, we are really excited about the future of our guys and program."

One point of pride Metcalf shared is his connection to Clarksdale and the Mississippi. He feels a sense of pride in being able to act as a change agent, as many did for him in the past.

"Growing up as a Delta kid and being able to do the things that the Lord has blessed me to do, coming out of Clarksdale, many people influenced my life," Metcalf pridefully shared.

One of the guiding principles that Coach Metcalf conveys daily is that student-athletes in the Mississippi Delta can compete and perform at high levels, all attributes that he sees in his current and entering rosters.

"It's huge to be back home and in the Delta and to give what I've learned to the student-athletes. If we work hard and we set our minds to a goal, we can obtain it," said Metcalf.

"We will be successful. Success comes in many forms," he said.

In addition to this signing class, Metcalf has added new faces to his coaching staff.
