CLARKSDALE- Coahoma Community College Women's Basketball is looking forward to bigger and better things in 2019-20. The ladies have come off the biggest win total in a decade. Head Coach
Stephanie Murphy wants her program to make strides toward the next level.
Murphy and Assistant Coach
Isaiah Butler has worked extremely hard in the offseason to put together a tenacious team that could compete for the MACJC Championship.
The most critical things Coach Murphy achieved in her first season included educating them on being leaders, being held accountable, and, most importantly, finishing strong.
Walneika Holmes,
Dzondria Young,
Ukari Pimpton,
Essence Lambert, and others bought into Coach Murphy's teachings. Majority of Murphy's first group was sophomores.
A fresh new group of ladies has arrived and is ready to step up.
Ayani Cockrell,
Brailyn Tate, and
Clarkaju Warren bring to the squad a lot of length, quickness, and power in the paint.
Jurnee McLaurin and
Mary Wilkins add the gifts of speed and shooting from long range.
Valencia Watson contribute speed all over the court and pure court vision as a point guard.
Jada Harris,
Dasia Harden, and
Iitasha Paty bring a lot of championship experience and leadership on and off-court.
The biggest challenge for Coahoma is inexperience and team chemistry. Murphy understands what the Lady Tigers are facing this season. "I understand that this team is young and inexperienced. They can learn from their mistakes and make critical plays to be successful," said Murphy.
The Lady Tigers will be on the road for the first weekend of the season before their home opener against Arkansas Baptist College on Saturday, November 16, 2019, at 3 p.m.
They open the MACJC North Conference play on the road against Northeast Mississippi Community College on Monday, December 9, 2019, at 5:30 p.m.
Coahoma could have a chance to compete for the MACJC North Division title. MACJC Basketball assesses specific aspects to determine a host site for their conference tournament. The MACJC North Division winner will host the MACJC Conference tournament this season. Murphy is excited that Coahoma has the opportunity to transpire an exceptional season. She has also been emphasizing the Lady Tigers' goals all over the Pinnacle.
"Hard work, discipline, and faith working together, we could achieve greatness this year," said Murphy. "It's going to take time in the beginning, but I believe in this team."
Coahoma will open the season by playing in the Today's Power Tip-Off Classic in Camden, Arkansas. Both the Mighty Tigers and Lady Tigers will battle Southern Arkansas University Tech on Friday, November 1, 2019, at 6 p.m. The Lady Tigers will follow up with a matchup against Connors State College on Saturday, November 2, 2019, at 1 p.m. Viewers can catch the game online live at www.coahomasports.com/watch and on Coahoma's radio station WCQC 91.3 FM.
