Tigers Brought the Fight to Indians But Fall Short

FULTON- Coahoma had some momentum after winning their first game in walk-off fashion against Blue Mountain College. They faced a bigger challenge on the road against #4 Itawamba. The Indians came in with their highest ranking and best start in school history. The Tigers started off well but couldn't finish off the Indians. Itawamba remains in first place in the MACJC with a 6-1 and 4-1 victory Wednesday afternoon.

In the first game, Coahoma watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 6-1 loss. 

Coahoma took an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Precious Sanders.

Itawamba (33-7, 24-2 MACJC) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI groundout by McKenzie Piper and an error during Bailie Springfield's bunt. 

Joanna Vasquez stepped up with an RBI single extending the lead to 3-1.

The Indians put the game away with RBI singles by Vasquez, McKenzie Piper, and Olivia Burns.

Itawamba stole seven bases during the game as two players stole more than one. Cori Childs led the way with three. 

Springfield led things off on the hill for Itawamba. She went seven innings; allowing one run on three hits, striking out nine and walking zero.

Mekayla Hubbard got the start for Coahoma. She lasted six innings, allowing six hits and six runs while striking out two. 

Hubbard, Sanders, and Lauren Schmidt each managed one hit to lead the Tigers. 

In the 2nd game, The Tigers once again had a good start but an abrupt finish in a 4-1 loss.

Hubbard stepped up and helped herself with an RBI sacrifice fly giving Coahoma a 1-0 lead.

Itawamba scored on an RBI triple by Piper in the first inning, an RBI double by Macey Cox in the first inning, and an RBI single by Childs in the second inning. 

Piper led the Indians with two hits in three at-bats. Olivia Burns led things off on the hill for Itawamba. She lasted seven innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out nine and walking one. 

Hubbard led things off on the hill for Coahoma. She allowed five hits and four runs over six innings. 

Sanders, Brooke Saez, ShaTerika Bernard, and Kanisha Hodges each collected one hit to lead the Tigers. 

The Tigers go to (1-29, 0-26 MACJC) on the season. They will conclude the 2018 season and MACJC Conference play against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. The game is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 20, 2018, at Eddie C. Smith Sportsplex. It will be part of a doubleheader followed by game two at 2 p.m.
