Tigers Fight But Fall Short Against Bears

Box Score SUMMIT- Both the Tigers and Bears have had their share of ups and downs this season. Coahoma entered into this heated matchup having made adjustments in play, but Southwest came up big in the clutch sweeping the Tigers (6-5 and 11-1) on Sunday Afternoon.

In the 1st game, the Tigers had a big comeback and forced extra innings. The game was tied at five within the bottom of the eighth when Melanie Crum hit a game-winning RBI single to give Southwest Mississippi a 6-5 victory.

Southwest (14-22, 7-17 MACJC) took an early 2-0 lead when Crum got an RBI single. The Bears would go on to score three runs in the third inning extending their lead to 5-0. Terrah Nelson, Jordan Mcnabb, and Madison Bates all contributed in the big inning with RBIs.

Coahoma rallied; getting on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Lauren Schmidt got a 2-RBI double cutting Southwest's lead to 5-2.

The Tigers came up big with three runs in the fifth inning. Precious Sanders got an RBI double. DeDe Mathis steps up with a 2-RBI single tying the game 5-5.

Southwest Mississippi saw the ball well, racking up nine hits in the game. Crum, Ashley Elsenshn, and Miranda Magee all managed multiple hits for Southwest Mississippi CC.

Kassie Shipley led things off on the hill for Southwest Mississippi. She went four and a third innings, allowing five runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking one.

Mekayla Hubbard was on the mound for Coahoma. She surrendered six runs on nine hits over seven and one-third innings, striking out five.

Coahoma collected ten hits. Sanders, Kanisha Hodges, and Alicia Witherspoon all managed multiple hits for Coahoma Community College Tigers Varsity. Witherspoon, Sanders, and Hodges all had two hits to lead the Tigers.

In the 2nd game, Southwest Mississippi carried their momentum in an 11-1 victory.

Southwest scored on RBI singles by Magee, Elsenshn, Kayla Mcnabb, and Carrington Jefcoat. Nelson got a 2-RBI double giving the Bears a 9-0 lead in the first inning.

Southwest Mississippi racked up 11 hits. Nelson, Mcnabb, Elsenshn, and Jordan Mcnabb each racked up multiple hits.

Mikaela Smith led things off on the hill for Southwest Mississippi. She went four and one-third innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out two.

Mekayla Hubbard led things off on the hill for Coahoma. She went two-thirds of an inning; allowing nine runs on eight hits and walking zero. Brooke Saez threw three and a third innings in relief.

Precious Sanders and Saez each managed one hit to lead the Tigers.

The Tigers go to (0-24, 0-22 MACJC) on the season. They will continue MACJC Conference play against Meridian Community College. The game is set for 2 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 13, 2018, at Eddie C. Smith Sportsplex It will be part of a doubleheader followed by game two at 4 p.m.
