Tigers Missed Opportunities Prove Costly Against Lions

CLARKSDALE– Coahoma Community College had hopes of ending a two-game home stand on a winning note on Tuesday Afternoon. East Mississippi Community College came to town looking to stay over 500 in the MACJC Conference. The Tigers had multiple chances to get on the scoreboard, but crucial mistakes prevented them from scoring. The Lions took advantage of the mistakes with big hits and critical scoring in a (10-1 and 12-2) victory.

In the 1st game, the Tigers watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 10-1 loss. The Coahoma Community College Tigers Varsity struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing the Lions, giving up ten runs. 

The Lions (9-11, 5-1 MACJC) scored on a double by Camryn Williams and a double by Carly Thompson in the first inning. They took an early 2-0 lead. 

Alicia Witherspoon got an RBI single cutting the lead to 2-1. East Mississippi changed pitchers in the 2nd inning. Bryley Rodriguez stepped in and had six strikeouts. 

The Lions scored five runs in the fifth inning. Thompson, Layton Sills, Rebekah Williams, and Kelsey English powered the big inning with RBIs. 

East Mississippi collected eight hits with Williams and Thompson each receiving multiple. Williams led the Lions with three hits in three at-bats. 

AG Stewart was on the mound for Lions and lasted five innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out eight. 

Mekayla Hubbard got the start for Coahoma. She allowed eight hits and ten runs over five innings, striking out four. 

Witherspoon and Kanisha Hodges each managed one hit to lead the Tigers.

In the 2nd game, Coahoma struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Lions. They couldn't recover in a 12-2 loss to Lions.

In the first inning, the Lions got their offense momentum moving with an RBI single by Mollie Singleterry. East Mississippi took an early 2-0 lead. 

Brook Saez got an RBI single cutting the lead to 2-1. Coahoma had the bases loaded in the third inning but couldn't score any runs. 

East Mississippi scored six runs in the fifth inning extending the lead to 6-1. The offensive firepower by the Lions was led by Thompson, English, Singleterry, and Williams, all knocking in runs in the inning.

Coahoma had the bases loaded in the fourth inning. Kanisha Hodges scored on a wild pitch cutting the lead to 6-2. The Tigers still had runners on 1st and 3rd with two outs. Cherokee Grays got picked off at 3rd base ending the inning.

Rodriguez was on the mound for the Lions. She allowed zero hits and zero runs over two innings, striking out two and walking one. 

The Lions racked up ten hits on the day with English and Singleterry all collected multiple hits. 

Hubbard led things off on the hill for Coahoma. She lasted four and two-thirds innings, allowing ten hits and 11 runs while striking out two. Brooke Saez threw one-third of an inning out of the bullpen. 

Witherspoon, Hodges, Grays, and Saez each collected one hit, leading the Tigers. 

The Tigers go to (0-8, 0-6 MACJC) on the season. They will continue MACJC Conference play against Jones County Junior College. The game is set for 2 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 9, 2018, in Ellisville, MS. It will be part of a doubleheader followed by game two at 4 p.m.
