Tigers Lose Tough Home Opener Against Wolves

CLARKSDALE– Coahoma Community College was hoping to get their first victory of the 2018 softball season in their home opener on Sunday Afternoon. Copiah-Lincoln Community College was looking to spoil the home opener and get over .500 in the MACJC Conference. The Wolves came up big in all phases of the game sweeping the Tigers 9-1 and 13-0.

In the first game, Coahoma watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 9-1 loss to the Wolves. Co-Lin scored on a walk by Taylor Bryant in the first inning and a single by Julie Scheuermann in the second inning. The Wolves took a 5-0 lead.

The Tigers struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Co-Lin, giving up nine runs. They finally get on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Alicia Witherspoon hits an RBI single cutting the lead to 5-1.

The Wolves scored four runs in the seventh inning. They had RBI singles by Scheuermann and Alex Anthony. Tori Pettit had an RBI double. 

Co-Lin (10-7, 3-1 MACJC) scattered ten hits in the game. Scheuermann, Bryant and Morgan Dubose all managed multiple hits for the Wolves. They stole nine bases during the game as three players stole more than one. Bryant led the way with four. 

Mekayla Hubbard led things off on the hill for Coahoma. She lasted seven innings, allowing ten hits and nine runs while striking out four. 

Coahoma had six hits total. Dede Mathis and Brooke Saez each managed multiple hits. Saez and Mathis each collected two hits to lead the Tigers.

In the second game, the Tigers fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 13-0 loss. Co-Lin scored on a single by Callie Fortenberry and a groundout by Abigail Thornton. They took a 3-0 lead in the first inning.  

Coahoma struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Co-Lin, giving up 13 runs. A double by Precious Sanders in the first inning was a positive for the Tigers. Coahoma's offense managed only three hits.

Mackenzie Gros led things off on the rubber for Co-Lin. She surrendered zero runs on three hits over four innings, striking out four and walking zero. 

Co-Lin totaled 11 hits. Thornton, Fortenberry, Alex Anthony and Julie Scheuermann all managed multiple hits.

Mekayla Hubbard led things off on the hill for Coahoma. She allowed 11 hits and 13 runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out one. Kanisha Hodges threw one-third of an inning out of the bullpen. 

Sanders, Brooke Saez and Kelsia Rogers each managed one hit to lead the Tigers.

The Tigers are 0-6, 0-4 MACJC on the season. They will continue MACJC Conference play against East Mississippi Community College. The game is set for 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 6, 2018, at Eddie C. Smith Sportsplex. It will be part of a doubleheader followed by game two at 2:30 p.m.
