Box Score CLARKSDALE- Coahoma Community College had a big challenge on their hands Friday afternoon. CCC played a second MACJC doubleheader in back to back days. Pearl River Community College came in tied for third place in the MACJC. The Tigers put up a fight offensively, but the Wildcats made enough big plays to sweep the doubleheader (6-3 and 8-5).
In the 1st game, Coahoma lost the lead late in a 6-3 loss. The game was tied at three with Pearl River batting in the top of the seventh when Elizabeth Taggawrd doubled on the first pitch of the at-bat; scoring one run. Hallie Malone extends the lead with an RBI single.
Coahoma lost despite out-hitting Pearl River Community College nine to seven; capturing a 2-1 lead in the first inning.
Mekayla Hubbard got the Tigers on the board with an RBI single. The Tigers also scored one run on an infield error.
The Wildcats (16-10, 9-3 MACJC) came back in the fifth inning scoring two runs. Taggawrd came up big with an RBI single to give Pearl River a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Tigers tied things up at three with an RBI single by Dede Mathis.
Olivia Holley toed the rubber for Pearl River. She lasted seven innings, allowing nine hits and three runs while striking out five and walking zero.
Pearl River racked up seven hits in the game. Taggawrd and Anna Grace Cooley all had multiple hits. Taggawrd led the Wildcats with three hits in four at-bats.
Mekayla Hubbard led things off on the hill for Coahoma. She lasted seven innings, allowing seven hits and five runs while striking out two and walking zero.
Precious Sanders went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead the Tigers in hits.
In the 2nd game, the Tigers fell behind early and couldn't recover in an 8-5 loss. Pearl River scored on a double by Halle Malone in the first inning and a groundout RBI by Jada Walker. Taggawrd got a 3 RBI double in the second inning giving the Wildcats a 6-0 lead.
Alicia Witherspoon got Coahoma on the board with an RBI single. Mathis stepped up with a 2 RBI double.
Kanisha Hodges got an RBI single cutting the lead to 7-4.
Rylee Swilley got the start for Pearl River. She allowed five hits and three runs over five and a third innings, striking out four and walking one.
Pearl River collected 14 hits on the day. Cooley, Malone, Sarah Depperschmidt, and Rylee Dawsey each collected multiple hits. Cooley went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Wildcats in hits. She also had four stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with nine stolen bases.
Mekayla Hubbard started the game for Coahoma. She lasted seven innings, allowing 14 hits and eight runs while striking out two.
Coahoma racked up nine hits in the game. Hodges, Hubbard, Witherspoon, and ShaTerika Bernard all had multiple hits. Witherspoon, Bernard, Hubbard, and Hodges each managed two hits to lead the Tigers.
"We played hard and we had some great effort on all three sides of the game," said Coahoma Head Coach
Erin Smith. "Kanisha played her heart out and made some amazing catches in the outfield. Dede had a clutch two-out double to tie the game. Terry and Alicia had several hits that got our offense going. This was a good day to have heading to Moorhead on Monday."
The Tigers go to (0-16, 0-14 MACJC) on the season. They will continue MACJC Conference play against Mississippi Delta Community College. The game is set for 12 p.m. on Monday, Mar. 26, 2018, in Moorhead, MS. It will be part of a doubleheader followed by game two at 2 p.m.
