Box Score DECATUR– The Coahoma Community College Softball team sought a big road victory against #10 East Central Community College, but the Warriors took advantage of big hits and good defense; sweeping the doubleheader (18-2 and 17-0).
In game one, Coahoma watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in an 18-2 loss. East Central scored nine runs in the 1st inning. ECCC got a home run by Shelby Walters, a triple by Eva Scott, a home run by Ali Gartman, a fielder's choice by Walters, and a home run by Madalyn McMahon. Mackenzie Johnson went yard in the third inning.
Coahoma got on the scoreboard in the 2nd inning.
Kanisha Hodges got an RBI single cutting the lead to 9-1.
CCC struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing East Central; giving up 18 runs.
East Central (16-6, 5-5 MACJC) collected 13 hits on the day that included four home runs. Johnson and Walters all managed multiple hits. Johnson would go on to led the Warriors with three hits in three at-bats.
Kaitlyn Oswalt got the momentum started for East Central. She went three innings, allowing one run on two hits, striking out six and walking one.
Mekayla Hubbard toed the rubber for Coahoma; allowing six hits and nine runs over one and one-third innings.
Brooke Saez threw two and two-thirds innings in relief.
Hodges,
Alicia Witherspoon, ShaTerika Bernard, and
Faith Harrington each collected one hit to lead the Tigers. Ultimately, their efforts couldn't address the force ECCC brought.
In game two, Coahoma fell behind early and couldn't make corrections; resulting in a 17-0 loss. East Central scored eight runs in the 1st inning.
Coahoma struggled to contain the high-powered offense of the Warriors, giving up 17 runs.
East Central tallied 17 hits in the game. Moore, Johnson, Jones, Katherine Shell, and Madison York each had multiple hits.
Hubbard got the start for Coahoma; lasting four innings, allowing 17 hits and 17 runs while striking out two.
Cherokee Grays,
Precious Sanders, and
Faith Harrington each collected one hit to lead the Tigers.
Head Coach
Erin Smith sees this as a learning lesson for her team.
"We have to puts all three aspects of the game together," said Smith. "We are going to try and figure out what the next steps are. We just have to keep fighting and our attitude needs to change moving forward."
The Tigers go to (0-12, 0-10 MACJC) on the season.
