CLARKSDALE– Coahoma Community College honored their graduating team members on Sophomore Night at The Pinnacle. The Tigers were looking to send the sophomores out with a bang against Holmes Community College. The Bulldogs made big plays in the 2nd half to secure a 73-49 victory on Monday Night.
Holmes (19-3, 9-2 MACJC North) took an early 6-2 lead when Javon Franklin scored a pair of layups. Quintarius Boatman knocked down a three-pointer cutting the lead to 6-5. The Bulldogs answered when Mikkel Normant scored a pair of baskets extending the lead 10-7. Marcus Summerville hit a three-pointer tying the game 10-10.
The Bulldogs went on a 10-2 run. Jonah Simpson and Kortez Wade scored a pair of layups extending the lead to 20-12. Rickey Smith and Jaborris Frazier score a pair of baskets cutting the lead to 22-16.
The Tigers stayed on the hunt with Courtney Stovall and Daquon Morris scoring a pair of layups cutting the lead to 31-26 at the half.
Holmes had a hot start to the 2nd half by scoring seven straight points. Simpson hit a three-pointer extending the lead to 38-26. Trevais Spencer scored a driving layup extending the lead to 40-28.
Coahoma tried to get back in the game. Morris scored five straight points that included a layup and slam dunk cutting the lead to 48-38. The Bulldogs pulled away with an 11-2 run. Spencer scored five straight points extending the lead to 59-40.
Holmes had three players that scored in double figures. Franklin led the Bulldogs with 13 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Spencer finished with 11 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Wade finished with 10 points and two rebounds.
Morris led Coahoma with 11 points, two rebounds and a block. Summerville finished with seven points and two rebounds. Malik Bailey scored six points, six rebounds, and two assists.
This was the last home game for Coahoma at The Pinnacle this season. Five sophomores were honored for Sophomore night.
The Lady Tigers had one honoree (Fredricka Holmes). The Mighty Tigers had four sophomores (Bailey, Summerville, Nkosi King and Gregory Talbot).
Also honored were graduating sophomores for the Coahoma Cheerleaders (Miracle Hunter, Jalisa Thomas, Ashley King, Ambershaye Hale, Kimora Tyler, Tkeyah Sharkey, Alicia Hill, Troy'Ledria Usry).
Coahoma goes to (3-19, 1-10 MACJC North) on the season. They will conclude MACJC Northern Division action against Mississippi Delta Community College. The game is set for 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018, in Moorhead, MS. It will be part of a doubleheader preceded by Coahoma vs. Miss Delta women's game at 6 p.m.
