Tigers’ Missed Opportunities Help Bulldogs Survive

CLARKSDALE- 15 sophomores hit the field for the Tigers' last time at James E. Miller Stadium. They were honored with a formal recognition before the game. Coahoma was ready, willing and able to end an eight-game losing streak against Holmes. The Tigers gave the Bulldogs their best shot but had several missed opportunities that would cost them. Holmes took advantage of the mistakes in a 27-14 victory on Thursday Night.

The Tigers set the tone with a 38-yard kickoff return by Justin Gammage. Chasten Lamb had a chance to put Coahoma on the scoreboard, but Elijah Pugh fumbled the snap and Holmes recovered the fumble.

The Bulldogs took advantage of the turnover when Jesse Wilson connected with Dylan Kelly for a 74-yard touchdown. Holmes takes a 6-0 lead.

Coahoma answers with a 73-yard drive on seven plays. Jaylin Jones scored a one-yard touchdown tying the game 6-6.

Holmes converted a 4th down and 9 when Wilson connected with Shaun Walton for 31 yards to the Tigers 13-yard line. Two plays later, Wilson connected with Kelly for a 13-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs took the lead 13-6 at the half.

The Bulldogs went back to work with a 65-yard drive on seven plays. Kelly scored a four-yard touchdown extending the lead to 20-6.

Coahoma bounced back when Myron Norfleet connected with Aakiel Greer for an eight-yard touchdown cutting the lead to 20-12.

Holmes got a huge break on 3rd down and goal. Gabe Short fumbled the football in the end zone and the Bulldogs recovered it for a touchdown.

The Tigers had a big drive to the Bulldogs' 13-yard line. Norfleet threw an incomplete pass intended for Greer on 4th down and 10. Coahoma receivers had four drops on that drive.

Holmes had 349 yards of total offense including 212 rushing yards and 137 passing yards. Wilson led the Bulldogs with four of seven passes for 137 yards, 11 carries for 30 yards and two touchdowns. Terry Bryant had 20 carries for 126 yards. Kelly finished with three catches for 106 yards and three touchdowns. Short had seven carries for 63 yards.

Coahoma had 349 yards of total offense including 193 passing yards and 156 rushing yards. Jones led the Tigers with 20 carries for 88 yards and a touchdown. Norfleet finished with 11 of 31 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown. Fabian Franklin had three carries for 63 yards. Legend Moore had five catches for 83 yards.

"We played a solid football game defensively but offensively we didn't have a lot of weapons," said Coahoma Head Coach Steven Miller. "What more can you ask for, especially when key starters are out."

Holmes finished with a winning season at 5-4 (3-3 MACJC North).

Coahoma finished the season 0-9 (0-6 MACJC North). They will have a whole lot of experience next year. 70 percent of the team will be returning and ready to step up. The schedule gets a lot tougher in 2019 as Coahoma will have only four home games and five road games.

"If we retain a lot of our freshmen and have a good recruiting class, we'll be right where Coahoma needs to be in 2019. We will have our hands full next season," said Miller. "Our kids still believe in Coahoma and rebuilding the football program. The young men we recruit had other schools recruiting them but chose to come here. We'll take wins and losses as they come. Our main goal is our players treated right and graduate to a four-year college."
