Mighty Tigers Have Bad Night Against Rangers

CLARKDALE– The Coahoma Mighty Tigers have had some dogfights in the last three games. They would need to find a new mentality to finish games. Their biggest test came on Monday night as Northwest Mississippi Community College rolled into town. The Rangers went into the game as the second place team in the MACJC North.

Northwest (12-2, 4-1 MACJC North) outplayed and outhustled Coahoma to grab first place in the MACJC North with a 99-75 victory at The Pinnacle. 

The game was competitive from its start as Jaborris Frazier scored consecutive layups to give Coahoma an early 6-5 lead. That would be the only lead the Tigers would have the entire game. 

Northwest soon took the lead and never looked back. Joseph Coleman and Radarius Washington scored consecutive layups giving the Rangers a 12-7 lead. Coahoma kept on fighting with Marcus Summerville scoring a driving layup cutting the lead to 15-13. 

The Rangers started to pull away with an 11-1 run. Clinton Moses scored a driving layup extending the lead to 26-14. Coahoma cut the lead down to 47-39 with 35 seconds remaining in the 1st half. Jitaurious Gordon knocked down a three-pointer, extending the Rangers lead to 51-39 at the half.

Northwest took charge in the second half 60-44 by hitting three straight three-pointers. Alex Shepard made one and Gordon made two. The Rangers continued to pull away with layups by Therrell Gosier, Cameron Walker, and Shepard. They had a commanding 71-49 lead with 13:31 remaining in the game.

Northwest had four players that scored in double figures. Gordon led the Rangers with 21 points, four rebounds, and five three-pointers. Justin Flakes scored 13 points and six assists. Shepard finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Tremont Robinson scored 11 points, two rebounds, and five assists.

Coahoma had two players that scored in double figures. Tarquise Harris led the Tigers with 16 points and six rebounds. DeNori Berry scored 12 points and six rebounds.

Coahoma goes to (2-13, 0-4 MACJC North) on the season. They will continue MACJC Northern Division action against Holmes Community College. The game is set for 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018 in Goodman, MS.

It will be part of a doubleheader preceded by Coahoma vs. Holmes women's game at 6:00 p.m.
