Coahoma Community College went to Goodman, Mississippi on a mission to knock-off the No.3 team in the NJCAA, take an early MACJC North Division lead and to get back to 500. The Tigers went toe-to-toe with Holmes Community College for the entire game, but the Bulldogs made huge plays down the stretch and survived a big scare from Coahoma 30-20.
Both teams were in a defensive stalemate most of the first half. Holmes appeared on the scoreboard first (3-0) when Connor McKay made a 32-yard field goal with 10:42 left in the first half.
Coahoma took a 6-3 lead when
Jaylin Jones (Bay Springs, MS) broke loose on a 23-yard touchdown run.
Holmes answered when Caleb Roebuck had a kickoff return 80 yards for a touchdown. The Bulldogs then took the lead 10-6 at the half.
Holmes increased the lead to 17-6 when
Mujahad Ibrihim (Olive Branch, MS) mishandled the punt and Chris Marshall picked it up and returned for a 35-yard touchdown.
The Tigers kept scratching and clawing the lead 17-12 when Jones scored a 31-yard touchdown.
Holmes scored their 1st offensive touchdown of the game with 9:20 left in the fourth quarter. Cameryn Brent scored a five-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs increased the lead 23-12.
Coahoma kept fighting to the end.
Trey Mitchell (Knoxville, TN) connected to
Eric Moore (Greenwood, MS) for a 45-yard touchdown. Then, Mitchell hit
Chris Claybrooks (Nashville, TN) for a two-point conversion cutting the lead to 23-20.
The Bulldogs showed why they are the No.3 team in the nation when Brent scored a 26-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach.
"We had an opportunity to make a statement with that game," said Coahoma Head Coach
Steven Miller. "We're still together and I know what kind of team we got."
Holmes finished with 354 yards of total offense with 240 rushing yards. Brent had 22 carries for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Jesse Wilson had 16 carries for 79. Shaun Walton had three catches for 64 yards. The Bulldogs is 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in the MACJC North Division.
"Holmes needed that last drive," replied Miller. "They everything necessary to finish out the game."
The Tigers finished 349 yards total offense including 150 yards rushing and 199 yards passing. Jones led Coahoma with eight carries for 85 yards and two touchdowns.
Josh Johnson (Opelika, AL) streak of 100-yard games ended this week at three. He had 20 carries for 72 yards.
Mitchell had 15 of 28 for 197 yards and a touchdown.
Moore had 3 catches for 61 yards and a touchdown, and Claybrooks had seven catches for 65 yards.
Coahoma is 1-3 on the season and 0-1 in the MACJC North Division.
The Tigers will be back home to host Northwest Mississippi Community College at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at the James E. Miller Stadium.
