SUMMIT –Coahoma Community College battled back against Southwest Mississippi Community College in a barn burner. They had opportunities to steal a victory on the road Monday night. The Bears made big plays down the stretch to take down the Mighty Tigers 93-87.
Southwest (1-0) had their biggest lead of the game at 66-54 with 14:32 remaining. Then Coahoma went on an 11-2 run. Daquon Morris and Marcus Summerville scored a pair of driving layups to cut the lead to 69-65 with 14:04 remaining.
The Tigers struck again with a 17-7 run. Malik Bailey hit a three pointer and Morris scored on a layup to give Coahoma an 84-83 lead with 2:42 remaining.
The Bears answered and never looked back. Bob Boyd knocked down a three pointer, giving Southwest an 86-84 lead. Then the Bears closed out the game on a 10-3 run.
Southwest knocked down 11 three pointers and made 20 of 39 free throws. They had three players in double figures. Roydell Brown led the Bears with 24 points and nine rebounds. Antonio Cowart Jr. scored 22 points and had 12 assists, followed by Jeremy Harrell with 10 points.
Coahoma had three players in doubl figures. Morris led the Tigers with 21 points and nine rebounds. Robert Boyd scored 13 points and seven rebounds. Tarquise Harris had 10 points and three assists.
The Tigers did not have a great day on the free throw line. They made 23 of 43 free throws.
"We had a chance to win this game, but youth and missed free throws cost us," said Coahoma Head Coach Michael Stringer. "Games like this will make this team better."
Coahoma goes to 1-2 on the season. The Mighty Tigers will have their home opener against Copiah-Lincoln Community College. The game is set for 8 p.m. this Thursday, Nov. 9, 2017 at the Pinnacle.
It will be part of a double header that's preceded by Coahoma vs Copiah-Lincoln women's game at 6 p.m.
