CLARKSDALE – Coahoma Community College Football (1-5, 0-3 MACJC North) and Itawamba Community College have a lot of history together. On Oct. 12, 2013, Coahoma and Itawamba had one of the most entertaining games that season.
The Tigers and Indians combined for 1013 yards and 88 points. Christian Williams scored the game winning two-yard touchdown giving Coahoma the victory 47-41 in double overtime. That victory was the last time the Tigers won a home game.
Now, four years later, Coahoma is looking to end their long home losing streak this Thursday Oct. 12 at 7pm at James E. Miller Stadium against the Indians. It will also be Sophomore Night as the Tigers will be honoring the graduating sophomores.
"We're honoring the accomplishments that our sophomores achieved this season," said Coahoma Head Coach
Steven Miller. "It would be great to show our appreciation to them."
Coahoma is coming off a 35-0 loss to No. 13 Northwest Mississippi Community College. They had 157 yards of total offense including 38 yards rushing and 119 yards passing.
Chris Claybrooks (Nashville, TN) led the Tigers with five returns for 130 yards.
Cecil Cherry (Frostproof, FL) had 16 tackles including 11 solos, five assists and three tackles for loss.
Rejohn Franklin (Gulfport, MS) had 12 tackles including eight solos, four assists and one tackle for loss.
The Tigers are not just looking to end the home losing streak. They are currently on a five-game losing streak. But with Sophomore night looming, Coahoma Head Coach
Steven Miller thinks that his team will be fired up especially the graduating sophomores.
"It's frustrating because things are not going our way," said Miller. "Once we get it clicking on the same cylinder, we'll have an opportunity to win a great football game. We want to win the one game that we know we could win."
Itawamba (3-2, 2-1 MACJC North) is coming off a 68-28 victory against Northeast Mississippi Community College. They had 553 yards of total offense including 438 passing yards and 115 rushing yards.
Dan Ellington comes in as one of the best quarterbacks in the MACJC. He averages 400 passing yards and four touchdowns. Last week, he was 28 of 38 for 438 yards, 16 carries for 74 yards and six touchdowns.
Itawamba's defense is a bend but don't break defense. They are led by Dayton Fox, Jarvis Hayes and Que Lott.
Coahoma has been competitive all season but they have not played a complete game. The Tigers are looking for a big breakout game that will give the team confidence and give the city of Clarkdale something to talk about.
"It would bring a smile to my face to see us shake hands with a victory on the scoreboard," said Miller. "Especially when the hard work from players and coaches pays off."
