The CCC football squad will feature 19 sophomores in 2015, 11 of them on the defensive side of the ball.
Gabriel Baldwin, Xavier Redmond, and Rhian Young all return at the defensive back position for CCC. Baldwin ranked 2nd in total tackles last season, finishing at 48. Redmond racked up 16 total tackles, including 9 solo efforts, and Young finished with 26 total, at times showing flashes of dominance, including a 10-tackle effort vs. Mississippi Delta.
At linebacker, Rashaun Weekly will be back. Weekly ranked 4th on the squad in total tackles with 44, 5 of them for a loss.
Also returning defensively are linemen Quartez Roby, Jimmico Payne and Jalen Tolbert. Roby figures to be key to the Tigers' plans in the trenches on the defensive side of the ball. The 6'3" Cleveland native led the team in sacks and finished second in tackles for loss last season. Tolbert played in every game for last year's squad, and Pimmico played in all but 1. The two combined for 35 total tackles.
On the offensive side, the Tigers will return 8 players. Mickey Ridley, Jr., who threw for 5 touchdowns and ran 2 more while splitting time at QB last season will return, as will running back Darius Coleman.Â
Ridley Jr. will have the chance to throw to familiar hands — receivers Keveon Shepherd and Greg Johnson will both be part of the 2015 sophomore receiving corps. Johnson had 11 catches for the 2014 squad, registering 1 touchdown while also returning punts.
The team will also feature 4 offensive linemen from 2014. Marvin Davidson of Greenville, AL and Perry Williams of Greenville, MS have drawn praise from offensive line coach Devario Dorsey and head coach Karl Morgan, and they figure to anchor a line that will also return Montarious Artis and Terry Welch.
The team opens the upcoming season schedule on August 27th at home vs. Pearl River.
