The men's and women's basketball teams will both be looking to bounce back from season-opening losses when they take on Hinds CC in the Pinnacle tonight. The women were defeated by East Central CC 92-64 on Monday, while the men fell to ECCC by a final of 75-55.
Though both games registered as routs, CCC certainly had their bright spots. On the women's side of things, Josta Totten went off for a double-double. The point guard finished with 10 points and 11 assists despite fouling out in the second half. Erica Collins also poured in 20 to help the Lady Tigers, who shot 55% from the field in the first half vs. East Central.
Coach Danetra Forrest cited breaking the full court press and breaking the full court press as areas in which she hopes her team will execute more efficiently. The Lady Tigers were stymied all evening by East Central's manic press, often failing to set up their offense and get the ball in the hands of reliable outside shooters like Amber Sisk. They also finished just 16-33 from the free throw line.Â
"I hope that we can learn from our mistakes in the first game and apply them tonight," Forrest said.Â
The men's side made their game against East Central competitive early but were not quite able to keep up down the stretch. The Warriors outshot the Tigers by 25% from the field in the second half to take command of the game.
CCC was paced by Cameron Monix throughout the game. The Clarksdale native put up 14 points and dished out 10 assists while also grabbing eight rebounds. His drives to the hoop helped open up an otherwise-stingy East Central defense. Demarcus Bracey also looked strong, racking up 11 points in only 20 minutes. Bracey was also the only Tiger with at least 5 shot attempts to shoot 50% from the field.
Coach Ira Peterson expressed confidence in his team going into the Hinds game. He praised his team's effort, committment, and defense in the gritty East Central game and added that the team's chemistry has continued to improve over the last couple of days at practice.Â
"I think you'll see a much better showing tonight," he said of the East Central matchup.
Both the Hinds' men and women enter the game in the same boat as the CCC squads. The Eagles dropped their home openers vs. Mississippi Delta CC, with the women falling by a final of 68-52 and the men stumbling to a 71-58 loss.Â
The ladies' game will tip off at 6 pm tonight in the Pinnacle, and the men will start following the conclusion of that contest.
