SENATOBIA, Miss. — The Coahoma Community College football team returns to the road Thursday, Oct. 1, when the Tigers travel to Bobby Franklin Field to face No. 11 Northwest Mississippi Community College in a Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference North Division matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Coahoma enters the matchup at 0-5 overall and 0-2 in MACCC North Division play following a narrow 42-41 loss to Itawamba Community College on Sept. 24. Despite the result, the Tigers delivered one of their most productive offensive performances of the season, totaling 516 yards of offense, 233 rushing and 283 passing.
The Tigers jumped out to a 14 - 0 first-quarter lead against Itawamba and continued to battle throughout the game. Running back Prentavis Madison scored twice in the opening quarter, including a 25-yard touchdown run, while quarterback Jacob Clopton connected with Anthony Thurman on an 18-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.
Coahoma's rushing attack also continued to be a major strength. Madison and Issac Day have provided a physical presence in the Tigers' ground game, with Day coming off a 184-yard performance against Holmes and Madison adding 117 rushing yards in that contest.
Our Tigers now face one of the toughest challenges on their schedule in Northwest.
The Rangers enter Thursday's matchup at 3-2 overall and 2-0 in MACCC North Division play. Northwest is coming off a 20-10 road victory over Northeast Mississippi Community College on Sept. 24, marking its second consecutive victory.
Northwest has been nationally ranked throughout the season and currently sits at No. 11 in the NJCAA rankings. The Rangers opened North Division play with a victory over Mississippi Delta, whom has been delivering shocking upsets this season, before defeating Northeast last week.
The Rangers' offense is led by quarterback Noah Gillon, who helped guide Northwest to its victory over Northeast. Against the Tigers, Northwest will look to build on an offense that has shown the ability to produce explosive plays, including a 52-yard touchdown connection from Gillon to TyAnthony Elmore in last week's win.
Defensively, Northwest has also shown its ability to pressure opposing offenses. The Rangers recorded five tackles for loss against Northeast, including two sacks, while limiting the Tigers to 10 points.
Thursday's matchup also marks the latest meeting between two programs with a long history. Northwest owns a 23-2 record against Coahoma and has won the last 15 meetings, including a 45-0 victory in Senatobia last season.
However, this year's Tigers enter the matchup with an offense that has demonstrated the ability to move the football against quality conference opponents. After coming within one point of Itawamba last week, Coahoma will look to turn its offensive production into its first victory of the season.
The game will also serve as Northwest's Homecoming contest, adding another layer to an already important North Division matchup. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Bobby Franklin Field in Senatobia, Miss.Â
