Coahoma scores 35 unanswered points in victory against ECCC

The 2022 CCC football season is off to a great start for Tiger Nation. Coahoma hosted East Central on Thursday, Sept. 1, in the Tigers' season opener.

East Central led 20-3 with 3:37 to play in the first quarter, but the Tigers rallied quickly. Terrick Latham returned ECCC's kickoff 45 yards to give CCC excellent field position. Two plays later; CCC QB Jaden Johnson connected with Latham on a 49-yard touchdown pass. The Tigers trailed 20-9 with 3:09 to play in the opening quarter.

Following a punt by the Warriors; Coahoma put together a 12-play, 94-yard drive that was capped off with a five-yard TD run by Jakobi Jackson.

On the second play of the ensuing possession; CCC forced and recovered a fumble by East Central. Coahoma's possession began at the ECCC 13-yard line. CCC scored in just two plays when Johnson tallied a 12-yard TD run. Coahoma led 22-20 with 9:15 to play in the opening half. The Tigers had taken the lead, and they held it throughout the remainder of the matchup.

After a four-play drive for the Warriors; Coahoma recorded an eight-play, 81-yard drive that resulted in a 22-yard touchdown run for QJ Skipper. The Tigers led 28-20 with 2:44 remaining in the second quarter.

CCC's defense forced a turnover on the ensuing possession, which led to a successful 36-yard field goal for freshman kicker Josh Eaves. At halftime, the Coahoma Tigers led by double-digits 31-20.

Coahoma received the opening kickoff of the second half, and the Tigers took advantage by scoring a touchdown off a five-play, 62-yard drive. Coahoma led 38-20 with 12:39 to play in the third quarter following Jackson's nine-yard TD run.

East Central's Tori Mulkey returned a CCC fumble for a 24-yard touchdown with 5:09 to play in the third quarter, but Coahoma countered by scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter. The Tigers won the game 52-28.

Coahoma's defense allowed 105 yards of offense throughout the final 53 minutes of the game, while recording three sacks and forcing four turnovers.

CCC's offense tallied 513 total yards. The Tigers ran the ball for 298 yards and six touchdowns. QB Mekhi Norris recorded 12 carries for 116 yards and 1 TD; Jackson registered 64 yards for two touchdowns off 13 carries; Skipper accounted for 80 yards and one TD off seven carries.

Nine different CCC players tallied a reception as Kobee Lockett and Marquis Willis were tied for the most with four each.

Coahoma's next game will be at Southwest Mississippi Community College on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 7:00 p.m. That matchup will broadcast live on coahomasports.com/watch and WCQC 91.3 FM.
