Tigers Bounce Back With 26-14 Victory Over Holmes

The Coahoma Community College Tigers were able to bounce back from a two-game losing streak with a 26-14 victory over Holmes Community College Thursday evening. Tigers took to the James E. Miller Stadium for the second time this season hoping the home field advantage would play a factor in the final outcome. Last year, Holmes definitively beat Coahoma with a 49-16 victory but the Tigers would seek revenge on a pleasant 61-degree night in Clarksdale, Mississippi. This was a very crucial win for head coach Travis Macon, as it trumps last year's team and coaching staff performances as they only won one game for the entire season.

"It was very important because we let our two previous games slip away, so, I was glad we started fast and finished strong. It was a great win for Tiger Nation," said Macon. The Tigers are now 2-2 for the season. Holmes came into this contest 0-2 and would leave Clarksdale still searching for their first victory. Coahoma learned from the last two games how difficult it is to play from behind and came out the gate swinging from the opening kickoff. Wide receiver Marvin Sanders ignited the team with a 54-yard return putting the Tigers in great field position on their first drive. Four plays later the Tigers would put the first points on the board with a three-yard run from quarterback Joe Johnson, who also earned his first start of the season.

Coahoma's defense, who have been performing in the top of the JUCO ranks, had a tough task ahead of them defending Holmes' "Wing T" offense. Coach Macon and Defensive Coordinator Kareem Moore devised an impressive plan to hold them below their season average. Defensively, they have been playing strong all year and they did nothing different this time around.
The Tigers defense held Holmes scoreless in the first quarter and put the offense on the field to take advantage of the last two minutes. Joe Johnson would complete the drive and finish out the quarter with an eight-yard rushing touchdown. Noah Sisk would secure the extra point kick, after missing his first, putting the Tigers up 13-0.

Coahoma showed major improvements in this match up as they struggled the last two games with turnovers. Coach Macon prepared his guys all week long for Holmes' unorthodox style of play. "One of the things we did as the coaching staff was prepare for if we won the toss I wanted to be receiving the ball and I'm glad we did because the opening kickoff return we took back all the way down to the 10-yard line and that was big because, we were able to get the offense set up in scoring position," said Macon.

The second quarter started and Holmes had its first touchdown after a long drive. Wykece Johnson scored from 14 yards out and Blake Backel followed with an extra point goal. Tigers Noah Sisk would respond with a 22-yard field goal as time expired for the first half with Tigers leading 16-7. Coahoma has been showing a consistent pattern of being more aggressive in the second half for the season and fans anticipated both teams to fight to the end. Holmes deferred the coin toss, received the ball and scored on their opening drive. Freshman quarterback Jevon McDonald scored from two yards out. Backel's extra point kick was successful. Coahoma led with a very short gap of 16-14.

With eight minutes left in the third quarter Booneville native, Noah Sisk would add a 37-yard field goal, Coahoma would lead the score 19-14. No more points would be scored for either teams as they entered into the fourth quarter. Coahoma fans sat on the edge of their seats knowing so much could happen in the last 15 minutes of a game having only a five-point lead. The turning point in the game came in the last four minutes when Holmes fumbled the ball and Tigers recovered it. Markell Young broke out for a 50-yard touchdown and essentially put the game out of reach for the Bulldogs. Sisk added another extra kick point for the night and sealed the victory for Coahoma 26-14.

Coach Macon was extremely pleased with the improvements made by his offensive players. "Offensively when we got in the 30 we scored and finished the drive, Joe did really amazing tonight. The offensive line did a good job blocking for him, Coach McCray always does a great job in the running game. He came up with the plan alongside Coach Wallace and it came out really well tonight," said Macon.

Joe Johnson finished the night with 175 passing yards. In total Coahoma had 301 rushing yards and 44 carries, surpassing the total number of yards gained by the previous Tigers for the 2019 season. All season long Tigers defense has delivered but a few players really stood out to Coach Macon during last night's game. "Robert Spearmon did a great job from the beginning as well as Brandon Dean and Donte Starks," said Macon. Coahoma Community College is still following COVID-19 regulations and only allowed 25 percent seating capacity. Coach Macon expressed gratitude to the fans that are turning out regardless of the restrictions. "I love these fans, I am excited to watch them when it's not a pandemic, they are going to pack this place out," expressed Macon.

The Tigers will battle Mississippi Delta Community College on Thursday, Nov. 12 2020.
