Lady Tigers Squeak Out Victory against Lady Eagles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DECATUR- CCC Women's Basketball Head Coach Stephanie Murphy worked toward making the Lady Tigers a success in the East Central Classic. Coahoma walked onto the scene of the holiday shootout with a whole new team. The ladies faced a tough rematch against Meridian Community College.

Both sides went down to the wire during an intense battle. Jurnee McLaurin scored the game-winning layup giving the Lady Tigers a 44-43 victory Monday afternoon at Brackeen-Wood Gymnasium.

Meridian had one last chance at victory. Sidney Sims was fouled and tried shooting two free throws with 8.9 seconds remaining. She missed them both, and the Lady Tigers landed a rebound to run the clock out so that they could seal the win.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers took a 35-32 lead on a 3-pointer by Mary Wilkins. Meridian went on a 9-0 run to take the lead to 41-35. JaTyler Turner scored consecutive driving layups.

McLaurin put Coahoma back in the game, with a 3-pointer and driving layup. The Lady Tigers cut the lead to 41-40.

Points were hard to come by for both teams in the first half. McLaurin carried Coahoma through the first half by scoring 13 points. The Lady Tigers led 25-21 at the half.

Sims led Meridian with 11 points. Turner finished with nine points. Mia Moore contributed eight points.

McLaurin mounted a whopping 27 points for Coahoma. Wilkins, Amaria Strong, and Ayani Cockrell scored five points each.

"We did a lot of things well, but we're still learning," said Murphy. "We're playing way too fast and had way too many turnovers for us to be successful. I'm proud of how these girls battled throughout the game."

The women's team goes to 3-1 on the season. The Lady Tigers will continue playing in the East Central Classic in Decatur, Mississippi. They will matchup against East Central Community College on Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at 1 p.m.

Coahoma's Mighty Tigers recently rolled past the Royal Ambassadors 108-50 in the Mississippi Delta Thanksgiving Shootout.

The men's team goes to 3-2 on the season. The Tigers will continue playing in the Mississippi Delta Thanksgiving Shootout in Moorhead, Mississippi. Their matchup against Baton Rouge Community College is scheduled for Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at 3 p.m.
