Trojans’ Big Shots End Tigers’ Season

MOORHEAD– Coahoma Community College sought to end its season with a victory over Mississippi Delta Community College. The Tigers battled all night, but the Trojans made huge plays securing an 89-77 win on Thursday night.

Mississippi Delta (9-14, 4-8 MACJC North) struck first with a 6-0 lead over the Tigers. Deshaven Flowers and Anthony Hughes scored a pair of layups. Quintarius Boatman scored a driving layup cutting MDCC's lead to 10-6. The Trojans would soon adjust; going on a 10-0 run. Avion Graham knocked down a three-pointer extending Mississippi Delta's lead to 20-6.

Coahoma came back with a momentum-changing 10-0 run. Marcus Summerville knocked down a three-pointer cutting the deficit to 20-16. Mississippi Delta answered with a 10-2 run. Flowers scored five straight points extending the lead 43-31 at the half. Flowers was 5 for five shooting with 12 points and nine rebounds in the first half.

The Trojans had a hot start in the 2nd half. D'Andre Finley scored a pair of driving layups extending Mississippi Delta's lead to 50-33. The Tigers fought back with a 10-2 run. Boatman and Daquon Morris scored eight straight points cutting MDCC's lead to 52-43.

Morris scored another layup bringing the score to 58-52. Mississippi Delta answered with a 9-2 run. Flowers caught an alley-oop dunk extending the lead 67-54. The Tigers made one more push when Malik Bailey knocked down a jumper. The Trojans put the game out of Coahoma's reach when Xa'vavier Jones knocked down a three-pointer with the shot clock running out; extending Mississippi Delta's lead to 84-69.

MDCC had three players scoring in double figures. Flowers led the Trojans with 21 points, 16 rebounds, and two assists. Jones finished with 20 points and three rebounds. Finley finished with 11 points, two rebounds, and two assists.

Coahoma had three players that scored in double figures. Boatman led the Tigers with 21 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Summerville finished with 16 points and five rebounds. Morris finished with 14 points, five rebounds, and two assists.

Coahoma finished the season (3-20, 1-11 MACJC North). The Tigers made great strides this season and are looking forward to a bright future. They are only losing four sophomores (Bailey, Summerville, Nkosi King, and Gregory Talbot). Nine players will return in the 2018-19 season. They will bring a lot of experience and leadership to the Tigers. Head Coach Michael Stringer knows that the program is improving and feels that Coahoma is ready for the next level.
