CLARKDALE– Coahoma Community College and Mississippi Delta Community College renewed their rivalry on Monday night at The Pinnacle. Both teams battled in a tight contest, but when the dust settled the Lady Trojans made big plays in the 4th quarter sealing a 71-66 victory.
Mississippi Delta (2-12, 1-5 MACJC North) took an early 7-0 lead. Coahoma Head Coach
Danetra Forrest called a timeout to wake up her troops. The Lady Tigers were recharged and refocused. They scored five straight points from
Geneva Walker and
Walneika Holmes tying the game 17-17.
Sabrina White made a jumper giving Mississippi Delta a 21-18 lead. Coahoma came back with a 10-2 run. Holmes and Walker scored a pair of layups to take the lead 28-23.
The Lady Trojans came back outscoring Coahoma 13-8 in the last 5:55 of the second quarter. Cyletria Rice scored a layup tying the game 36-36 at the half.
The Lady Tigers took control early in the third quarter with a 14-1 run.
Deeanna Harrington scored a driving layup extending the lead 50-37. Holmes hits another jumper giving Coahoma their biggest lead 58-43.
Mississippi Delta wouldn't go away that easily, coming back with a 20-0 run. Patrisha Lollis and Alexis Augustus scored a pair of baskets giving the Lady Trojans a 63-58 lead.
Walker scored a pair of layups cutting the lead to 63-62. The Lady Trojans put the game away 67-62 with a three-pointer by Rice.
Mississippi Delta had two players scoring in double figures. Augustus led the Lady Trojans with 12 points and eight rebounds. NaTanya Wilkerson scored 10 points and two rebounds. Lollis finished with nine points and 14 rebounds.
Coahoma had two players scoring in double figures. Holmes led the Lady Tigers with 29 points, three rebounds, and four steals. Walker finished with 15 points, four assists, and three steals.
Coahoma goes to (2-14, 0-6 MACJC North) on the season. They will continue MACJC Northern Division action against Northeast Mississippi Community College. The game is set for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018, in Booneville, MS.
It will be part of a doubleheader followed by Coahoma vs. Northeast Mississippi men's game at 7:30 p.m.
